Job Description
Position: Substance Abuse Counselor
Supervisor: Director of Nursing and Student Wellness
Location: Farmington High School and its feeder schools
General Job Description: Under the direction of the Farmington Municipal Schools Support Services department, the counselor will work with at-risk students, families, teachers, administration and staff. Involves work in a team setting with families as well as administrators and teachers in an effort to remove barriers related to substance abuse in alignment with FMS's strategic priority of maintaining a safe, supportive, and orderly school environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Identify, inform and update school personnel of available resources (programs, personnel, special projects, services, agencies) at the schools, in the district, and in the community
• Define and inform school personnel of referral, triage and case management processes that facilitate and assure the appropriate and effective utilization of resources
• Coordinate program intake and intervention plans with students and families.
• Organize and implement direct instruction for students who are referred to substance abuse intervention programs through a combination of group and/or individual sessions and/or behavior academies.
• Assist school to assure follow-through on monitoring interventions in schools and classrooms
• Explore and advocate for improving and augmenting existing resources to ensure a wider range of resources is available (including encouraging preventive approaches, developing linkages with other district and community programs and facilitating relevant staff development
• Work with school level Student Assistance Teams (SAT) to accurately assess the needs of the student/families in order to remove barriers to learning and family functioning
• Maintain records and necessary documentation as required by supervisor and state level program managers
• Record necessary documentation as required by supervisor, and federal levelprogram managers.
• Keep current on trends in prevention and positive behavioral support interventions through local, state and regional meetings.
• Obtain training in behavioral interventions and prevention curricula, philosophies and practices
• Attend team meetings such as when necessary and as scheduled
• Accept other responsibilities assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications: Masters Level Social Worker/counselor preferred; BA level considered.
Current Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor license required (LADAC). Skills and experience with prevention and early intervention with student K-12, family intervention, group counseling, assessment, referral skills, mediation, program evaluation and implementation. Good communication skills, strong leadership skills and ability to work as a team member a must. Experience and training in drug and alcohol prevention
services with an understanding of public school education and it's position in the community and knowledge of how to contact and utilize community resources.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired. The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture.
Equipment/Technology Handled: Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.
Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After hour work may be required.
