DEFINITION:
A Police officer performs a wide variety of duties connected with general police work including investigation, general enforcement of laws and ordinances in the City of Superior and providing other various types of assistance to include advancing the mission of the Superior Police Department. The entry level Police Officer must successfully complete a 18 week recruit academy (if not Wisconsin certified) and 14 weeks of on-the-job-field training. The City will pay you while you attend the recruit academy AND pay for the recruit academy!

Work Schedule: Patrol Officers currently work 12 hour shifts, 4 days on - 4 days off (built in overtime included).

A Lateral Transfer Police Officer must have one year of full-time law enforcement experience and be eligible to become a Certified Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer prior to hire. Upon hire, a Lateral Transfer Police Officer will be credited with their years of full-time law enforcement for the purposes of wage placement, vacation accrual, and minimum experience for Detective application. The Lateral Transfer Police Officer must successfully complete 14 weeks of on-the-job field training, in addition to passing a 12 month probationary period.

DEFINITION:

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Police Officer series includes the Master Police Officer. The Master Police Officer level is attained with 10 years of service as a Police Officer for the City of Superior Police Department. With each year of service the Officer is expected to take on more responsibility and work more independently.
Police Officers must successfully complete a recruit academy if not Wisconsin certified, and a 14 week on-the-job field training program in addition to passing a probationary period. The probationary period will begin with 1st day after completion of recruit school, or 1st day of employment if already Wisconsin certified and not attending school, and continue for a twelve (12) month period.
Employment Standards
Knowledges: Working knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement; laws and ordinances governing local law enforcement; first aid; and geography of the City of Superior and surrounding area. Some knowledge of court proceedings and proper investigative practices.
Abilities: Ability to successfully complete a recruit academy (if not already Wisconsin certified), and successfully complete a 14 week on-the job field training program; prepare clear and concise reports; operate a computer; speak clearly and effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel and the general public; provide credible testimony in a court of law; use a firearm and other equipment; drive a police vehicle; work under adverse weather conditions; work varied shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; and use good judgment, integrity and tact.
Requirements/Special Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
Training and Experience: Must be a U.S. citizen. Must have no serious criminal convictions. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire. Must have earned a high school diploma or GED and completed 60 semester units of college prior to the written test. Must have accurate color vision. Must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/200 in each eye corrected to 20/20 vision in one eye and not worse than 20/40 vision in the other eye. A satisfactory history of soft contact lens wear for more than one year with vision corrected to 20/20 in one eye and no worse than 20/40 in the other eye, is also accepted.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
License Requirement: Must become certified as a State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer within one year of hire date and maintain such certification.
Oath of Office Requirement: Will be required to take an oath of office.
Driver License Requirement: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Residency Requirement: Must reside anywhere within a forty-five minute response time to the corporate limits of the City of Superior within 6 months of completion of probationary period.
Background Investigation Requirement: Must pass a detailed background investigation prior to hire.

WRITTEN EXAM "The National Police Officer Selection Test" (POST).- by Stanard & Associates, Inc.
Monday, January 6, 2025 at 3 p.m. or Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 9:00 am. You will be able to sign up for either date. The exam will take approximately 2 hours.
The exam will be given in Superior only. Exam notices will be emailed to qualified applicants at the email address listed on their application.
INTERVIEWS: Will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 in Superior, Wisconsin. Physical Readiness Testing will be held at a location, date, and time to be determined. Check back periodically for updated information.
We will be giving the Law Enforcement Academy Physical Readiness Test (PRT). A link to the PRT details is found here: This is the same exam that you would be required to pass at the recruit academy. Please read through the exam and save the link so you can practice and be prepared for the test..
Eligible applicants must score among the top 50 passing candidates on the written test to continue in the process. Successful candidates must then pass an interview and a physical readiness test to be placed on the eligible list. Veteran's Preference points will be assigned prior to calculating the final score for ranking on the eligible list. Following these tests, candidates on the certified hire list must complete and pass a background investigation to be considered for appointment. Finally, candidates must pass a psychological examination, post job offer medical examination and drug screen to receive a probationary appointment.
The eligible list established through this process will be used for filling vacancies for a two year period from the date the list is established. The list can be extended up to 3 years by the Superior Police and Fire Commission.
Benefits included with this position:
1) Health/Dental Insurance: To be effective the first of the month after working 30 days of employment. Once eligible, the monthly Health/Dental insurance premium will be deducted from the first 2 paychecks each month. The 2024 monthly health/dental insurance premiums (employee portion 10%):
Single: $113.22 (2 deductions of $56.61)
Employee+1: $236.62 (2 deductions of $118.31)
Family: $362.26 (2 deductions of $181.13)
The City has a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). The 2024 annual deductible is: $3,200 for Single coverage & $6,400 for Employee+1 or Family coverage. The City will contribute $1,600/$3,200 (2024 amounts) of that annual deductible into your Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2024, which will carry over if not used and is always yours to use until spent. There is no proration on the deductible or the City's contribution.
2) WI Retirement System (WRS) - The WRS is among the best funded and best managed public pension systems in the country!: You will be required to make contributions to your WRS benefit at 6.9% of gross wages (2024 rate). The City will contribute the balance of this benefit, which is 14.3% in 2024 (total of 21.2% going into your retirement benefit). Wisconsin statutes prohibit opting out of the WRS benefit.
3) Life Insurance: Eligible for life insurance on the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment. Ability to purchase up to five times your annual salary of coverage on yourself, and you can also purchase spouse/dependent coverage. If you do not apply when first eligible (within 30 days of start date), you will be required to complete an evidence of insurability.
4) Vacation/Sick Leave: Will accumulate from first day of employment to become available after successful completion of your 12-month probationary period. 40 hours of vacation may be carried over into a subsequent calendar year.
5) Paid Parental Leave: Up to six weeks of paid parental leave is available to employees to use following the birth or adoption of an employee's child, or placement of a foster child.
6) Compensatory Time: Compensatory time (in lieu of overtime) can be accrued to a total maximum of 120 hours each calendar year. Unused comp time is paid out the first payday in December each year.
7) Floating Holidays: 36 hours/year. Floating holidays will carry over in the first year, but must be used in the subsequent calendar year or they will be lost.
8) Personal Day: 12 hours available after completion of probationary period. Personal day hours must be used in the year received or they will be lost.
9) Longevity pay when eligible as follows:
After ten (10) years of service, employees will receive an adidtional 1.5% of their base salary;
