The postdoc position is based at the Center for Research on Life Course and Inequality (LIVES), which is one of the research units of the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences (SSP).

It brings together researchers who are interested in life courses and social inequalities, as well as in the research methods used to study them.

The faculty has established a joint research program 'Developments in Research and Methods of the Social Sciences' (DReMSS) with the Swiss Centre of Expertise in the Social Sciences (FORS).

FORS enhances and supports empirical and methodological work in the social sciences by conducting important longitudinal and comparative surveys as well as... substantive research based on the data they produce.

Moreover, FORS is involved in coordinating different larger national and international projects (such as ESS, EVS, ISSP, SHP and SHARE).

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sociology with a focus on comparative social research

Job information:

The post-doc position will structurally be part of LIVES (UNIL) and the person appointed will be expected to strongly collaborate with members of the survey teams at FORS as well as contribute to the activities of the joint research program DReMSS.
Expected start date: 1st July 2023
Contract length: 2 years, with a possible extension by 1 year

Activity Rate: 100%

Yearly gross salary:
Depending on experience, minimum starting salary CHF 81'402 in the 1st year

Your responsibilities:

The Postdoctoral researcher will:
• Contribute to all activities related to the ISSP secretariat (40%), this includes daytoday activities, organization of meetings and events as well as the preparation of reports
• Provide methodological expertise and contribute to FORS/LIVES inhouse methodological research and activities of the joint research program DReMSS, including presentations at internal meetings (10%)
• Develop a personal research agenda (on a substantial and/or methodological topic) using FORS (ideally ISSP) data (50%).

Your qualifications:

- a PhD in sociology, political science, economics, demography or another relevant social science discipline
- strong research experience quantitative social research (focus on topics related to social stratification/social inequality) and knowledge on current challenges in survey methodology
- advanced skills and experience of data management and statistical analysis of (large-scale) survey data using Stata and/or R
- a good research and publication record relative to the career stage
- professional attitude and conduct including organizational sensitivity, research integrity, pragmatism as well as excellent communication and organizational skills;
- collaborative attitude and teamwork orientation;
- fluency in English, spoken and written (C2 level); knowledge of French and/or German is an asset.
