Do you want to be responsible for establishing the critical process parameters at the lab scale for a gigafactory?

We are looking for a Process R&D Engineer, Labscale Process Validation to conduct experiments on the lab scale that will first identify critical process parameters.

FREYR Battery is on a mission to decarbonize energy and transportation systems globally by producing the world’s most sustainable battery cells. Over 50% of all carbon mitigation is dependent on batteries. The industry is experiencing exponential growth.

FREYR is well set to succeed in this extremely exciting sector. We opened our first commercial-scale battery cell factory in Mo i Rana, Norway at the end of March. We will use this plant to prove both 24M’s semi-solid technology and our various products. This technology represents a breakthrough in the industry providing new Unique Selling Points, and much-reduced cost, CO2... footprint, capex, and factory size.

We will then build gigafactories based on 24M’s technology in Mo i Rana and in Georgia USA before expanding our technology base with other partners. We have concrete plans for building an enormous 200GWh capacity, which collectively can be expected to provide an annual turnover of more than $15 billion.

In the role of Process R&D Engineer, Labscale Process Validation you will be responsible for conducting experiments at the lab scale that will first identify critical process parameters and then establish processing trends at larger scales including our pilot plant and our gigafactory.

The ideal candidate should have a general knowledge of materials and be versatile and self-sufficient with an eye on the overall process flow.

The position reports to Director FREYR Technology and is to be based in Mo i Rana. Trondheim might be considered for the right candidate.

Main tasks include
• Responsible for owning and executing tasks related to processing research and development.
• Designing process experiments to answer questions or to provide clarity of different processes and their impact on subsequent processing steps.
• Contributing lab scale experiments related to up / downstream process validation (e.g. Characterization, lab scale testing for powder, clay, electrode, unit cell)
• Performing report to lab scale process task
• Supporting the development of process competence
• On-site troubleshooting industrialization phase
• Execution for failure root cause analysis and product improvement and verification processes

Qualifications – Required
• Master’s Degree or Ph.D., in materials science and engineering, process engineering, electrochemistry, mechanical engineering, or equivalent disciplines
• Excellent understanding of battery materials and mechanical structures of battery cells
• Experience and a good understanding of design tools such as DFMEA, DOE, FTA etc.
• Hands-on experience in cell building,, testing, and analysis (lab-scale or industry-scale)
• Hands-on experience in battery material characterization (physical, chemical, electrochemical, and mechanical)
• Strong presentation and communication skills
• Experience with working in quality processes and systems (8D, Six Sigma, etc.)

Qualifications - Advantageous
• Experience with lithium-ion batteries
• Experience with industrial-level process engineering
• Experience lithium-ion battery development and/or manufacturing in an industrial context
• Experience working in an international company
• Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) process
• Experience with technical risk assessment and mitigation activities (FMEA), specifically PFMEA
• Knowledge of CAD, modeling, or relevant simulation techniques
• Able and willing to travel to FREYR factories (Mo i Rana and overseas), Innovation Hub Centers (Trondheim and Japan), equipment vendors (worldwide), customers (mainly Europe and US), and technical partners (esp. US and eastern Asia)

About FREYR Battery

FREYR Battery aims to provide industrial scale clean battery solutions to reduce global emissions. Listed on the New York Stock Exchange, FREYR’s mission is to produce green battery cells to accelerate the decarbonization of energy and transportation systems globally.

FREYR has completed its commercially sized pilot factory and started building the first of its planned gigafactories, both in Mo i Rana, Norway. The company has also announced potential development of factories in the U.S. and Vaasa, Finland.

FREYR intends to deliver a minimum of 50 GWh of battery cell capacity by 2025, over 100 GWh of annual capacity by 2028, and over 200 GWh of annual capacity by 2030.
