The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO’s Market Structures department invites applications for a full-time Senior Economist.
This individual will serve as the primary Economist for Market Design... The Senior Economist will influence long-term market design evolution including participating in the design of competitive wholesale market structures, conduct in-depth analysis of the factors that shape market dynamics and pricing, including supply and demand factors, regulatory policies, and technological innovations, and leverage and develop analysis on the design, structure, behavior, and outcomes in the bulk electric power markets administered by the NYISO to ensure that market designs, market signals, and protective measures promote workably competitive solutions.
The Senior Economist is also responsible for the development and facilitation of a process for systematic review of the interaction between NYISO market design and the market designs of neighboring markets. Support Market Design’s relationship with the external Market Monitoring Unit (MMU) by providing technical and analytical review of MMU recommendations. This individual will prepare and present proposals for new and evolving market designs, tariff and rule changes to NYISO stakeholders, including internal staff, the MMU, senior management, market participants, affected regulators (FERC, PSC, etc.) and others.
Successful candidates will be self-motivated professionals who demonstrate effective leadership, strong decision making and problem-solving skills, and good judgment within a team-based environment. They must exhibit excellent communication skills and have prior experience managing multiple competing priorities and relationships. To effectively drive consensus, they must be able to anticipate and address organizational and team needs to display a clear understanding of the organization’s decision-making process. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong knowledge of and some experience with micro-economic fundamentals (scarcity, marginality, supply and demand, market structures, elasticity, and externalities), econometric modeling techniques and principles of complex economic theories, e.g., game theory.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Economics or related field required. Master’s degree (MA, MS, MBA) in Economics or related field strongly preferred; Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Economics or related field a plus.
• Minimum of Eight years NYISO experience, five years of energy industry or professional experience, including ISO-specific experience
• Must have knowledge of electric power utility industry and/or competitive markets, market operations, market economics; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
