The University of Maryland Eastern Shore invites applications for the position of Lecturer of Art Therapy. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, nine-month appointment.

The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the Department by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds.


This is an in-person position, not online. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Fine Arts, the Lecturer will:

• Teach 12 undergraduate credits in art therapy and/or foundations level studio classes, such as drawing, design, sculpture or ceramics
• Demonstrate a strong, unwavering commitment to fostering an anti-racist, equitable work environment supportive of people from different cultures, backgrounds, and life paths
• Teach all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and sound pedagogy
• Assign and evaluate projects that align with course or core learning objectives and provide timely feedback to students.
• Hold six weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students
• Assign and submit student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadlines.
• Administer numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.
• Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in the relevant degree program and/or the university core
• Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the department
• Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students
• Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Chair of the Department of Fine Arts.

• Research could include writing and publication in scholarly journals in the field of art therapy, and/or creation and exhibition of art.

• Provide effective service to academic entities, such as the Department of Fine Arts, the School of Education, Social Sciences and the Arts, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore through contributions other than teaching and scholarship such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, and community service performed by professional expertise or association with the university as appropriate to rank and experience.

Required Qualifications
• Master's degree in art therapy with ATR-BC credentials. .
• Clinical experience in art therapy and/or counseling practice, and have demonstrated expertise in scholarly, or studio professional practice.
• A solid understanding of and commitment to decolonizing, equity, and inclusion practices, preferably in a college context.
• Demonstrate the ability to work collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students daily, and demonstrable dedication to an inclusive, student-centered pedagogical philosophy.
• The ideal candidate will bring research focus that enhances their ability to teach the curriculum in ways that conceptualize key interactions between the fields of art therapy, psychoanalysis, contemporary art, art history, or visual studies. Areas of research interest to the department include:
• historical and theoretical foundations of art therapy, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and counseling.
• contemporary art theory and practice.
• child and adolescent art therapy and counseling.
• critical pedagogy and interdisciplinary approaches to art therapy education.
• critical social theory and related emergent ideas in art therapy and related professions.

Preferred Qualifications
• Previous teaching experience at the college level. If the candidate has not yet had the opportunity to teach, they should demonstrate their potential to teach by way of detailing their experience in mentorship positions, and/or in training in the classroom, gallery, collections, or community, or overseeing undergraduate student employees or interns.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Effective communication skills to include written communication.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Excellence in teaching and a commitment to mentoring students.
• Ability to work with and supervise students.
• Knowledge of relevant computer programs (Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, Adobe Creative Cloud applications)
