Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking an Afghanistan bureau chief to take responsibility for covering the legacy of America's longest war in a country once again controlled by the Taliban. A primary coverage goal will be to reveal and illuminate how the Taliban is remaking Afghanistan.
This is a challenging, high-profile assignment that requires the resilience needed to navigate a troubled country led by conservative leaders who have yet to gain broad international recognition.
The bureau chief will report from inside Afghanistan over long stretches of time, making frequent trips there, but will be based elsewhere in the region... While focusing primarily on Afghanistan, the bureau chief will sometimes cover stories in South and Central Asia, as well. The bureau chief will be responsible for coverage of Pakistan and work closely with Pakistani and Afghan journalists employed by The Post.
We have identified a strong internal candidate for this role but would welcome hearing from others interested in this role or others on The Post's international staff.
The new correspondent would take the reins from Susannah George, whose intrepid, penetrating and empathetic reporting over past 3½ years captured so memorably this exceptional moment in Afghanistan's history and the struggles of its people.
To fill this role, we are seeking a committed journalist with high initiative and a proven record of covering difficult assignments distinctively and with grace. Any candidate must be sufficiently nimble to pivot between fast coverage of major events and more ambitious reporting that unearths the facts and insights needed to illuminate Afghanistan and the lives of Afghans at this moment. The most qualified candidates will have experience as an international correspondent, and will be adept in conceiving and delivering stories that blend visuals and text. Proficiency in Pashto, Dari or Farsi would be valuable but is not required.
Candidates should upload a r esum e, cover letter and three examples of impactful, attention-getting reporting to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 4/25/2023 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Foreign Editor Douglas Jehl, Deputy Foreign Editor Jennifer Amur, Senior Editor Alan Sipress and Managing Editors Cameron Barr and Krissah Thompson.
