The Dietitian is responsible for the provision of medical nutrition therapy for patients using the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics’ (AND) Nutrition Care Process (NCP). This includes assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation. The Dietitian works in collaboration with other members of the health care team including LIPs, nurses, therapists, nutrition associates. The Dietitian represents St. Luke’s Hospital as a nutrition expert and food service consultant to a variety of organizations, provides nutrition lectures, education to students and new staff and participates in community health promotion events. Uses technology to maximize information exchange.

Responsibilities
• The associate is aware of hospital and department compliance for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.
• Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
• Successfully completes hospital-wide orientation, annual hospital competencies and department/unit specific competencies.
• For the safety of our patients and co-workers, St. Luke’s Hospital requires seasonal and job related vaccinations. This is reviewed regularly during periodic health assessments.
• Uses the steps in the Nutrition Care Process to interpret nutrition screens, perform initial and follow-up nutrition assessments, implement interventions and the personalized nutrition plan of care.
• Documents nutrition care according to department policies using approved format, content and timeliness standards.
• Interprets nutrition care orders per approved department nutrition care manual and implements consistently in patient education and meal service.
• Provides instruction and counsel to patients and/or significant others according to protocol and documents appropriately.
• Performs and documents meal rounds, and carries out special studies to monitor patient meal acceptance and improve quality outcomes as needed.
• Oversees the work of the Diet Tech and Nutrition Service Assistants to promote effective patient and client communication regarding meal service and nutritional care.
• Communicates appropriately with interdisciplinary health care teams to assure optimal patient care . Makes appropriate medical nutrition therapy recommendations to members of the health care team.
• Participates in Performance Improvement that provides quality nutrition services outcomes based on current evidence based standards and meets regulatory standards (TJC, DIA)
• Contributes nutrition expertise by serving as a member of relevant hospital committees.
• Demonstrates competence by working in a variety of inpatient and outpatient clinical settings.
• Provides nutrition education programs for health care providers, associates and members of the community emphasizing the role of good nutrition in a healthy lifestyle in conjunction with the St. Luke Hospital’s mission, vision and values through presentations and the media.
• Represents the hospital as the nutrition expert for media interviews.
• Acts as a preceptor to student dietitians and other health care providers.
• Completes timely written reports. Reports and processes errors, omissions, incidents and unusual occurrences promptly.
• Maintains continuing education. Utilizes and shares information from conferences/workshops.
• Assumes all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
• Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics/Nutrition. Dietetic Internship or equivalent Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)approved program.
• Master of Science in Nutrition and Food Service or specialty certification as a Certified Diabetes Educator, a Clinical Nutrition Support Clinician, or Board Certification Specialty from CDR in Gerontology, Renal, Pediatrics or Oncology Nutrition is preferred
Qualifications/Experience
• Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). One to three years as an RD or RDN is preferred.
• Maintains current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Membership in the AND is preferred.
• Maintains a current License to practice Dietetics in the state of Iowa.
• Meets on-going continuing education requirements to maintain License and CDR registration
