Job Duties

The Chickahominy Health District local health departments covering Charles City, Goochland, Hanover, and New Kent counties of the Commonwealth, is part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) that serves the citizens of these localities preventing illness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and protecting the environment. This position will be based in Hanover County. Typical work hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm.

This is a RESTRICTED POSITION which is solely funded by the Federal WIC Grant. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually. Annual funding cycle is Oct. 1st to Sept. 30th of the following year. Employment is contingent on the continued availability of grant funds.

The Nutritionist will provide nutrition services to clients in a variety of settings within the district. Characteristic activities: conducts patient nutrition assessments and evaluations in the clinic, school and community settings; develops and monitors nutrition care plans and food packages. Certifies clients for participation in available public health programs; schedules, provides and documents basic and secondary/high risk nutrition education; makes referrals to programs such as Medicaid, TANF, and SNAP benefits. May perform other related administrative tasks. This position also serves as the agency’s Breastfeeding Coordinator. The successful candidate will complete a related training and will work closely with the agency’s breastfeeding peer counselor.

Minimum Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of nutrition and dietetics and its relationship to public health and regulations/standards for the program
• Knowledge of nutrition principles and an ability to make appropriate nutrition assessments for all age groups, including women, infants and children; ability to obtain, interpret, and evaluate data to describe population served and outcomes of nutrition intervention
• Strong communication, organizational and planning skills; ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff members individually and in group settings
• Ability to respond to public inquiry regarding the WIC program

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Registered Dietitian
• Experience having successfully breastfed a baby for at least 6 months
• Completion of a 45-hour LEAARC approved breastfeeding training within the past 5 years &/or International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant
• Prior public health experience and/or experience with WIC program preferred
