The Hospital of the University of Munich, Germany, is one of the largest and most competitive university hospitals in Germany and Europe. 49 specialized hospitals, departments and institutions harbouring excellent research and education provide patient care at the highest medical level with around 11.000 employees.

The Medizinische Klinik I (Kardiologie) on the Campus Großhadern invites applications for the Department of Cardiology on the 01.05.2023, in part time, for a

PhD-Student (m/f/d) Medizinische Klinik I (Kardiologie)

Scope of duties

Heart Failure with a preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF) affects millions of patients worldwide and has no treatment. Our group focuses on both basic experimental and translational approaches to investigate the pathophysiological mechanism underlying microvascular disease in HFpEF.

We use a broad range of in-vitro and in-vivo methods to investigate the influence of systemic inflammation, including neutrophil functions on thrombopoiesis inside... the bone marrow (Petzold et al., Immunity 2022) and on functions of newly generated platelets.

State-of-the-art methods include transgenic mouse models with cell type-specific knockout mice, a broad range of clinically relevant models of cardiovascular disease and inflammation, superresolution in-vivo microscopy as well as as multi-panel flow cytometry and proteomics.

This project is part of the international "MegaCardiocyte consortium" funded by the German Center for Cardiovascular Research in cooperation with the British Heart Fundation and Dutch Heart Fundation.

The Department of Cardiology is funded by and embedded into various collaborative research centers and graduate schools of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Special funding is provided by the BHF-DZHK-DHF International Cardiovascular Research Partnership Awards within the MegaCardiocyte consortium.

Our requirements
• We require the applicant to have a major interest in cardiovascular disease on the crossroad of thrombosis and immunity.
• Previous experience with handling of mice, especially surgical techniques, is favoured.
• Experience with the analysis of experimental data and high-resolution microscopy is a plus.
• We expect strong communication and teamwork skills.
• The position is designed for a period of 36 months.

Our offer
• We provide an interdisciplinary team of biologists, medical doctors and bioinformaticians, jointly working on pathophysiological mechanisms of clinical relevant cardiovascular diseases. We further provide a diverse range of mechanistic in-vitro models, state-of-the-art murine disease models with superresolution in-vivo live microscopy. A PhD or a Dr. rer. nat, Dr. biol. hum., Dr. med. are possible.
• We offer further education and training, company pension scheme, childcare services, mobile work (if suitable), job ticket, discounts and staff accommodation.

Disabled persons will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification. Presentation costs cannot be refunded. For further information please contact PD Dr. med. Tobias Petzold / Dr. med. Manuela Thienel, phone: +49 177 420 - 2593 or +49 176 477 - 91251.
