The Assistant Landfill Manager position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating landfill operations and employees to ensure that performance goals are met while maintaining compliance with the EPA. The Assistant Landfill Manager is responsible for the adherence to landfill operating standards, the development of supervisory goals and objectives, and the management of labor hours and... expenses. Assistant Landfill Managers ensure the highest standards of environmental safety and environmental compliance are met while minimizing operational costs and maximizing productivity. The hours and level of responsibility may vary by location.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION:
• Maintain landfill to meet requirements for EPA regulations and inspections.
• Obtains and tracks production and quality control data, tracks budget and cost controls.
• Implements landfill development plans, meeting facility needs, and recommends equipment needs.
• Monitor and enforce quality and safety standards and ensure all compliance goals are met or exceeded.
• Ensures all established costs, quality, and delivery commitments are met for landfill operations and site projects.
• Tracks and reports production and operating stats to Landfill Manager and supervises the resolution of operations and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
• Performs administrative activities associated with the effective landfill management including compiling, storing, retrieving production data for reports, supervision of landfill personnel, equipment, and site activities.
• Maintain proper records and files including all compliance and personnel records.
• Supervises trash placement according to approved plans and permits.
• Works with and provides direction to Landfill Supervisors to ensure trash, site, and construction activities and objectives are met.
• Under the direction of the Landfill Manager, directs daily activities of the trash, site, and construction crew including the night shift to Landfill Supervisors.
• Coordinate landfill activities with all other functions of the organization and suppliers to obtain optimum productions and utilization of human resources, machines, and equipment.
• Performs timely performance reviews for employees under direct supervision, recommends disciplinary actions and completes all other required documentation relating to assigned personnel.
• Coordinates with contractors.
• Assures completion of operator observation forms timely.
• Completes assigned Compliance Assistance tasks timely.
• Ensures all Company safety policies and programs are being complied with at all times.
• All other duties assigned by management.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent customer relations and personnel management skills
• Must be able to read and understand landfill set grades using a surveyor’s instrument
• Must be familiar with EPA requirements regarding landfill
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelors’ degree or Associates degree from an accredited college or technical school; preferred
• Must have previous management experience
• Must have waste industry experience
• Computer experience preferred
• Minimum 5 years heavy equipment operations experience
• Minimum 3 years landfill experience or equivalent
• Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) certification, preferred
• Must demonstrate experience in problem solving, leadership, quality management, planning, organizing
• Ability to work weekends and/or holidays
• Ability to work in all weather conditions
• Ability to operate all landfill equipment proficiently
• Surveying and GPS experience preferred
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Moderate exposure to noise, heat/cold, dust and fumes as found in a landfill facility
• Exposure to extreme weather conditions
• Exposure to residential, commercial, and special waste
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Legally eligible to work in the United States
• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Must be able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, regulations, policies, and safety training
• Must be able to produce satisfactory pre-employment drug test and background check results
• Ability to work weekends and/or holidays
• Ability to work in all weather conditions
