Your role

The Environmental Specialist will have considerable experience in the field of environmental management and is responsible for carrying out activities and programmes to ensure compliance with the site’s Industrial Emissions Licence (IEL), ISO 14001 requirements, and in-house/Corporate environmental programmes.

Individual will work closely with Environment Manager, and other technical managers/engineers to drive continuous improvement in existing programmes as well as... provide technical expertise on safe/compliant operation for day-to-day operations and infrastructural projects.

The Environmental Specialist will lead/interact with regulatory bodies on all regulatory compliance programmes and future change requirements for new infrastructure/processes.

The Environmental Specialist will measure, monitor and evaluate site Environmental performance, according to established and drive continuous improvement.

Essential Job Functions
• Support the site’s response to Regulatory, Corporate and Environmental Management System audits / certifications / revised licence & regulatory adjustments.
• Regularly interface with Merck disciplines and project managers to ensure compliance with the site’s IEL, relevant Regulations, codes of practice and corporate standards.
• Ensuring activities are carried out in compliance with the site’s IEL and the requirements of ISO 14001.
• Prepare relevant regulatory reports at required frequencies. Provide compliance evaluation and business partner support on emissions to water, sewer / air / waste management and other programmes defined in regulatory licences.
• Working with EHS team to audit and maintain an effective EHS Management System.
• Working with the EHS Team to ensure that all required environmental policies, procedures, and facilities are in place.
• Ensuring that all relevant environmental applications / reports are obtained/prepared, analysed and maintained.
• Leading environmental incident investigations and root cause analysis identifying corrective and preventive actions and presenting findings to Management. Driving the tracking and implementation of corrective/preventive actions.
• Any other reasonable duties as requested by the Environment Manager (or EHS/technical manager).

Who You Are
• Essential: Degree and/or a recognized Environmental Science/ Environmental Engineering qualification.
• Desirable: Degree/Diploma in H&S or additional suitable engineering/science/project management discipline.
• >7yrs Experience in delivery of environmental management for large scale regulated manufacturing or Seveso /chemical industry setting.
• Strong experience in regulatory interactions for compliance, licensing applications and liaisons.
• Management of subcontractors, technical specialists and outsourced resources.
• Demonstrated project management, expenditure management, programme management and multi-tasking ability in large industry.
• Strong knowledge in environment legislation and working knowledge of large scale industry environmental aspects (WWTP/abatement systems etc).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent technical report writing in regulatory capacity.
• Business partner support.
• Ability to prioritise work and work independently on technical/regulatory requirements.
• Ability to work to meet scheduled timelines.
• Flexible and constructive approach to problem solving.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
