JOB SUMMARY
The DoSeum is seeking an energetic, team-oriented individual who will promote joyful learning and active discovery through a variety of meaningful interactions with museum Guests. The Experience Engineer will engage learners of all abilities—and their caregivers—in The Doseum Experience, fostering educational play and inquiry- based learning in the museum’s galleries. Additional duties will include: professionally addressing Guest questions and comments; troubleshooting and re-setting exhibition technology; light cleaning and resupply of exhibition spaces; selling general admission and special event tickets, as well as memberships; leading educational programming for families, school groups, and/or DoSeum camps; and documenting opportunities for improvement.
As part of the office of Gallery Facilitation & Experiences, the Experience Engineer role serves as a primary face and voice of the organization. Successful candidates are personable and approachable, project positive energy, present in the moment, creative, and must have strong people and problem-solving skills. They are respectful to Guests and fellow Staff. Prior experience working with young children is highly valued, as is the ability to play with confidence and without hesitation. Delivering authentic, memorable, and delightful experiences for every learner is key to the position’s success. Reporting to the Managers, Gallery Operations & Gallery Education, this is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position which will be paid based on the hours worked.
The Experience Engineer role is a part-time position of 20 – 23 hours per week.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Education
• Facilitate caregiver/child interactions throughout museum galleries and outdoor spaces, fostering curiosity and learning through play.
• Lead educational programming based on established curricula, including gallery-based activities with families to school visits and DoSeum camps.
• Build a solid foundation in understanding children’s developmental stages, learning theory, and best practices in terms of promoting child/caregiver interactions; able to engage all learners and adjust to their needs.
• Interact with museum Guests to ensure an educational and delightful experience.
• Encourage the exploration of exhibits and props in new and meaningful ways.
• Work closely with the Education staff to stay abreast of current in-house programs, facilitation strategies, and exhibition updates/schedules.
Guest Service
• Contribute to a safe, positive, and fun work atmosphere, prioritizing decisions in order of safety, courtesy, area cleanliness, and efficiency.
• Greet all DoSeum Guests in a friendly and professional manner, while delivering outstanding service to all.
• Learns and utilizes DoSeum shared language to promote inclusivity and belonging.
• Staff DoSeum front desk, selling general admission tickets, special event tickets, and memberships, and associated cash handling duties.
• Administers a series of opening and closing procedures to ensure the building is show-ready.
• Adheres to a rotation through multiple positions or a single gallery assignment depending on the needs of the operation.
• Ensures all exhibit elements are working correctly, troubleshoots as necessary, and reports malfunctions and maintenance issues.
• Ensures spaces are clean and appropriately stocked at all times, disposing of trash, wiping down surfaces, and arranging props as needed.
• Empowered to address and resolve Guest concerns and complaints using the LAST service recovery model.
• Empowered to address safety and cleanliness issues, reporting them appropriately.
• Masters point-of-sale and exhibition maintenance systems, including Altru and MERIT.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Project a positive attitude toward the organization and co-workers. Model and ensure that actions, appearance, attitude, and attendance are at a level suitable for the organization.
• Serve as a positive and dynamic team player and leader—outwardly and obviously friendly—to foster intra- and interdepartmental work and relationships.
• Attend all trainings assigned and pertaining to the position, and adhere to standards and practices established in DoSeum policies, protocols, and standard operating guidelines.
• Travel locally as needed.
• Perform additional duties as required or requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• High school degree or GED required. Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent is preferred. Will consider candidates actively enrolled in and pursuing bachelor’s degree.
• Fluent in Spanish, including the ability to read, write, and communicate with guests highly desirable but not required.
• A declared interest in and enjoyment in working with/teaching young children is a must. Successful experience working with children needed (e.g., experience as a teacher, camp counselor, informal educator, daycare staff, etc.).
• Able to work with large number of children / parents / chaperones / teachers visiting the museum or at an off- site educational event.
• Must be enthusiastic, approachable, confident, creative, and present in the moment, with a good sense of humor and ability to play without hesitation.
• Ability to learn point-of-sale system.
• Comfortable and familiar with computers—both Mac and PC—and with technical hardware (e.g., projectors, cables, monitors, remotes, solid state players, etc.) or willingness and ability to be trained.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle available for local travel.
• Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
