The Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) assists FAO members to develop sustainable livestock systems. It hosts intergovernmental bodies, multi-stakeholder initiatives and knowledge networks that provide information and technical and policy support to development efforts, including adapting to a changing climate and mitigating the impact of livestock agrifood systems on climate and other environmental targets. The Division has expertise in animal health (One Health), animal production and genetics, and livestock sector analysis (social, economic and environment) and policy.
The post is located in the Livestock Information, Sector Analysis and Policy Branch (NSAL). NSAL provides information services and carries out analysis in support of technical and policy interventions towards sustainable livestock, focusing on social, economic and environmental goals.
Under the overall supervision of the Chief, NSAL, the direct supervision of the... Livestock Policy Officer and in collaboration with FAO colleagues, the incumbent will contribute to the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031, on Better Production (BP1: Innovation for sustainable agriculture production), Better environment (BE1: Climate change mitigating and adapted agri-food systems, BE2: Bioeconomy for sustainable food and agriculture, and BE3: Biodiversity and ecosystem services for food and agriculture ) and to 2030 Agenda for Sustainable development, mainly towards SDG2, SDG13, SDG14 and SDG15.
The incumbent will contribute to NSAL’s work on livestock and environment and will support the development of FAO’s technical programme and projects on livestock and environment, focusing on climate change, nitrogen use efficiency, ecosystem services and circular bio-economy approaches. The incumbent will also support the NSAL’s work on policy analysis to support climate actions in the livestock sector and the development of internationally agreed methods, data and metrics for the environmental performance of the livestock sector.
Tasks and responsibilities
The incumbent will:
• Review background documentation, scientific literature, and statistics on national climate actions, nitrogen use efficiency, ecosystem services and circular bio-economy approaches in the livestock sector and compile a comprehensive review document;
• Identify and catalogue existing FAO and partners’ projects/programmes related to livestock and environment at global, regional and national levels - exploring potential synergies to maximize impact and align narratives;
• Synthesize key information from existing documents, given the scope of the intended FAO technical programme, that can then be used as input to the development of a feasibility assessment, regional or national concept design and proposal development.
• Prepare and organise global technical meetings with experts, regional and national consultations with member countries and other livestock stakeholders (including private sector) to identify national needs and opportunities for collaboration.
• Prepare materials, brochures, country factsheet and other documents for the technical briefing of member countries on FAO’s support of livestock and environment
• Support FAO members countries in delivering on their livestock-related commitments and targets (Nationally Determined Contributions) through technical and policy analysis and capacity development to enhance climate actions;
• Collaborate in capacity building at country and regional level through policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information and learning materials;
• Contribute to the drafting of the global report on nitrogen challenges and opportunities in agrifood systems;
• Perform any other duties as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
• A university degree in animal sciences, environmental or agricultural sciences, natural resource management, biology science, environmental economics and policy or a related field as appropriate for the specific profile.
• At least one year of professional experience related to the development of multi-disciplinary policies, projects and programmes in agri-food systems, climate change, nature-based solutions, sustainable livestock production, natural resources management, integrated landscape management, forestry, environmental economics, or a related discipline.
• Working knowledge (level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) of French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or Russian for Consultants. Working knowledge of English will be sufficient in the case of PSAs.
