The Emergency Department (ED) LVN is an essential member of our ED team, caring for our medical and behavioral health patients. LVNs support and collaborate with our care team of Physicians, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Social Workers, Child Life Specialists and others to provide safe care for our patients. They assist in the triage areas by gathering vital signs, administering standing... orders/medications, rooming patients and providing comfort care. They can assist with placing peripheral IVs (once certified), urine catheterization, EKGs, splinting, IV bolus administration, POCTS such as streps, urinalysis, glucose checks, covid swabs, urine pregnancy tests, Oral/SQ/IM med administration, and assist with procedure holds for laceration repairs and lumbar punctures etc. They assist with transporting patients to CT, MRI, PICU, the Floor and assist in traumas with CPR, blood retrieval, etc. They also are trained to do intake for our robust behavioral health pediatric population.

Each day within the department is different and LVNs may work in several different zones within one shift. Our LVNs are not given patient assignments within zones but instead support RNs within the specific zones. Successful LVNs are flexible, adaptable, and comfortable with changing hats and responsibilities to assist with the needs of the team. Strong communication and being a team player is key! Comfort with de-escalation techniques and managing challenging behaviors is a plus.
