The Ozark/St Francis National Forest is looking for an intern or recent graduate with education and skills in soil science that will bring a professional knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methodology sufficient to classify soils, prepare soil survey manuscripts, and interpret soil information according to technical standards.This 26-week program is a rigorous work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, including development and training opportunities, and the opportunity to make a lasting impression on generations to come. Duties:
• Conducts field reconnaissance and prepares soil survey reports, watershed restoration plans, erosion control plans, soil resource improvement plans, soil management reports, and other special project reports for planners, timber, water, range, recreation or wildlife managers, and partner agencies.
• Identifies alternative soil management practices for different groups of soils.
• Serves on interdisciplinary teams conducting environmental analyses of proposed projects, providing direction that is in line with standards in the Forest Land Management Plan.
• Follows established Forest Service procedures to evaluate, assess, and adjust complex project or program plans to implement provisions of federal environmental standards.
• Monitors ongoing projects to evaluate the effects of management practices on the soil.
Qualifications:
Working on or completed a bachelor's degree in physical sciences, soils major.

• Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
• Direct Hire Authority Eligibility - after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions
