The Human Resources Services team enables the delivery of comprehensive Human Resources programs and services in collaboration with leaders, HR area offices and HR practitioners across our community. Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs (CMPA) is responsible for McMaster's communications (including, media relations, issues management, internal communications, neighbourhood relations), marketing and branding, and public affairs with all three levels of government.

The Manager, Communications for the Human Resources Services department will be responsible for playing a leadership role in developing and leading a comprehensive and proactive strategic communications plan to help effectively communicate the employee value proposition at McMaster, inclusive of priorities related to internal and external communications, events, marketing and branding, and storytelling and engagement in a variety of traditional and digital forms. This role will be key in preparing the HR annual report with the AVP/CHRO's guidance and providing leadership in the development of the annual Top Employers submission. The role will entail bringing together subject matter experts from various areas within HR to coordinate a HR communications subcommittee, helping to communicate HR services and key messages for employees. With a comprehensive and strategic approach to communication, including digital communications, the Manager will review and update the HR website, our social media presence, and be actively engaged in developing and advancing issues of both strategic and operational importance.

The Manager will report into the Assistant Vice President, Communications Marketing and Public Affairs, and will work closely with the Assistant-Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Human Resources. The incumbent will work in collaboration with team members across the HR portfolio, as well as leaders and employees from across the University.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with sound judgement, decision-making and project management skills, and is highly-regarded for their exceptional interpersonal, research and writing skills. You have a demonstrated integrative and inclusive approach to your work, and will be effective working in partnership with both the HR and CMPA teams and other support areas of the University in order to achieve key goals.

Accountabilities

This role provides a leadership role in the development, implementation and management of the Human Resources communications programs and initiatives and acts as a liaison and connector with other University communication staff

Works closely with the AVP and CHRO, HR in developing strategies to enhance and support priorities under that portfolio

Responsible for the development of a strategic communications plan for Human Resources that will include the programs to facilitate increased understanding of McMaster and the AVP and CHRO's goals, objectives, and successes by increasing profile in key internal and external audiences

In partnership with Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs, this role is responsible for relationship development with the University's key audiences and partners such as faculty, staff, students, media, alumni, supporters, government and the community

Develops a comprehensive and strategic approach to communication, including digital communications via website development and content, social media and emerging digital opportunities

Manages the successful development of communications strategies on a wide range of University/ Human Resources issues

Manages and prepares a variety of internal and external communications including, generation of story ideas for internal audiences, media, marketing and other key targets

Assists with preparing and producing special and strategic communication materials

Provides leadership in the implementation of the University's branding and marketing strategy within the Human Resources and works collaboratively to support HR's marketing related objectives

Represents the University to key internal and external audiences such as community leaders, politicians, and other partners

Develops and manages a comprehensive and proactive communications program with an emphasis on storytelling and reputation development to support comprehensive communications programs including media

Acts as a University spokesperson, as required

Creates, implements and evaluates the effectiveness of all related projects

Identifies and develops opportunities for senior officers to maximize effective communication

Supports McMaster's advancement priorities through an integrated communications program

Qualifications:

Education:

University degree in Communications or a related field.

A Master's degree, or specialist certification is an asset

Experience:

5 + years progressive experience in a similar position, or similarly complex environment

Starting salary for this position is between the range of $84,176 to $100,000 (annual) with the higher range requiring significant experience in HR or related strategic communication.
