POSITION TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION / BEHAVIOR SUPPORT TEACHER - 200 Day Calendar

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Provide leadership to effectively plan, coordinate and implement programs of instruction that ensure students opportunities to reach their highest social, emotional and academic potential. Support and assist school-based personnel in improving the quality of teaching and student learning for students with disabilities. Select and present materials required in the teaching assignment within the framework of the content limitations of state and system curriculum guides. Support and assist teachers in planning a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students. Supervise and assist in development and implementation of classroom technology which may relate to the use of audio, video, graphics, research technologies and other tools to facilitate learning. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Maintain satisfactory attendance defined by system or local school handbook. Comply with conditions stated in contract of employment. Comply with the federal, state and local board of education requirements for the development of educationally appropriate instruction. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and work cooperatively with all staff members in attaining school goals and objectives. Support teachers in the development of reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Attend staff, department, team, or grade level meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Participate as required in the appropriate state annual evaluation process. Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
Additional responsibilities are as follows: Abides by the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Evaluates students with disabilities and gives recommendations for a prescriptive program. Supports and assists school based personnel in organizing, coordinating, planning and directing the implementation of a comprehensive classroom instructional program for students with disabilities based upon Behavior Consultation Request. Plans and delivers professional development to school based personnel to improve behavior outcomes for students with disabilities. Supports collaboration between families and school based personnel regarding educational decision-making for students with disabilities. Provides modeling and other support required to school based personnel to ensure, improve, monitor and assist with students who demonstrate disability-related behavioral needs. Assists teachers in improving classroom management and climate through the implementation of effective instructional methods and effective behavioral strategies. Completes Functional Behavior Assessments as required based upon IEP team decisions. Develops Behavioral Intervention Plans based on the data collected from completed Functional Behavior Assessments. Assists and supports special education teaching staff with data collection and monitoring for behavioral interventions. Participates in instructor training to re-deliver essential training to county based staff. (Mindset, FBA/BIP, etc.) Supports teachers in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal requirements. Supports teachers in monitoring progress on IEP goals frequently and makes appropriate changes in the student's education program. Participates in and provides consultation to the Student Support Team (SST) and the IEP team. Collaborates with staff members and parents regarding the academic achievement and functional performance of students. Provides consultation to other staff members concerning the unique needs of students with disabilities and appropriate interventions. Follows all procedural safeguards and documents adherence in an appropriate manner.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION OR TRAINING:
Minimum of bachelor's degree from an Accredited College or University and state required certification.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 5 years required teaching experiences. Experience working with students with varying disabilities with behavioral concerns.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Ability to organize, coordinate, plan, and support the teacher in the implementation of a comprehensive classroom instructional program for students with disabilities. Proficiency required in oral and written communication, interpersonal relations, and competency in counseling and evaluating students with disabilities. Ability to apply critical thinking skills in high need situations, to work with collaborative teams. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with students, parents, administrators and staff, and excellent skills in oral and written communication. Displays knowledge and application of the appropriate behavioral interventions (for students with social emotional needs, trauma, sensory needs, etc.), curriculum and the instructional programming for students with disabilities in compliance with all State and Federal regulations, Coweta County School System policies, rules and regulations and mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
