Position Descriptin
The Engineering Manager is the on-site engineering representative responsible for leading the engineering testing, commissioning, and ongoing support of new technologies, growing systems, and automation for... Sensei Farms Leamington greenhouse and automated packing facility. The Engineering Manager will help to ensure new technologies and systems are installed properly, operating properly and when any issues arise, they will be the lead on finding short term and long-term solutions for maximizing uptime of equipment. The Engineering Manager will frequently communicate with others from the distributed engineering team to plan projects, prioritize implementation, and communicate project status and issues that arise. The Engineering Manager will work with the operations team to identify areas for continuous improvement to increase efficiency. The engineering manager will track and report results of testing various technologies and systems and make recommendations about integrating them into commercial operations. Examples of technologies that the Engineering Manager will lead with testing and commissioning include: automated growing systems, automated materials transport, automated packing equipment, robotics, and other computer controlled greenhouse systems. This role will be based at our farm in Leamington, Ontario on-site 5 days/week + on-call for emerging issues.
Responsibilities
• Manage the installation, operation, and analysis of new and existing technology systems at our farm such as growing and transport systems, automation equipment, and packaging equipment.
• Build a close relationship with operations team to ensure successful operations of systems and equipment and identify where technology can be used to improve the greenhouse and post-harvest operations. Additionally, identify operational considerations that need to be factored in when the engineering team is evaluating new technologies and systems.
• Understanding internal needs and working with stakeholders to implement change.
• Work with operations and engineering teams to support successful commercial installations of technologies that advance to implementation at commercial scale.
• Testing new farm and packing technologies including planning, leading execution, measuring results, and presenting analysis and proposed next steps.
Required Skills, Abilities and Qualifications
• Knowledgeable about running a farm and what is required to run a farm.
• Excellent in working with people.
• Familiar with following processes, getting teams to follow processes, and documenting results.
• Experience with computer-controlled equipment, automation/controls systems.
• Experience with food safety and following proper operating and hygiene procedures.
• Familiar with and experienced with managing operations with continuous improvement and lean manufacturing methodologies.
• Comfortable working in a high stress environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and a team player.
• Working with distributed teams with collaboration tools such as Zoom, Wrike, and Slack.
• Minimum 5 years' experience managing installation and operational support of technical systems in greenhouses.
Preferred Skills, Abilities and Qualifications
• Experience running Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) farm, greenhouse and/or vertical farm.
• Experience growing produce indoors.
• Experience in food production & packaging.
• Passion for growing nutritious, affordable, and sustainable produce.
Educational Requirements
• BS or MS Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Agriculture), Agriculture Management, related technical field, or equivalent work experience
