Position: Solicitor II - Real Estate and Development
Summary:
Assist the Director of Legal Services/City Solicitor in advising and representing the City in matters of law and providing quality legal advice and services to City Council and all Departments of the Corporation with an emphasis in the area of real property law and development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
(These set out the principal functions of the position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements).Assist the Director of Legal Services/City Solicitor in advising and representing the City in all matters of law, preparing legal opinions, and providing legal advice to the Director, City Council and Staff.
Full carriage of the Corporation’s routine and complex real property transactions from negotiation through to registration.
Draft by-laws, procedures and policy documents. Negotiate, draft and review legal agreements and other legal documents as necessary.
Advise and consult... with outside professionals on general municipal issues and provide instructions to external legal counsel as required.
Attend City Council and Committee meetings and prepare written reports and make presentations as required.
Assist in the management of the Department as directed by the Director of Legal Services and perform all other duties as assigned.
Position
Requirements:
A bachelor's degree and graduation from a recognized University and Law School.
Law Society of Ontario membership, in good standing.
Five (5) years of progressive experience practicing law, with a solid base of solicitors experience in real estate transactions is required as the duties will include negotiating and drafting agreements related to land acquisition and disposal.
Experience in drafting and reviewing land development agreements, commercial contracts, and corporate law would also be an asset.
Though not a prerequisite for the right candidate some Ontario Land Tribunal experience would be an advantage.
Demonstrated attendance/attainment of recent professional development education.
Well-developed coaching, supervisory and leadership skills with a proven ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally.
Excellent communication, research and report writing skills.
The ability to work in a team environment, liaison with key external stakeholders and individuals/departments at all levels of the organization and to function effectively with minimal supervision.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to demonstrate innovation and accomplishment.
Ability to work under conditions of strict confidentiality is essential.
Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software programs and the ability to adapt quickly to applicable software.
A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.
Proven completion of Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness training. Valid Ontario Driver's licence, Class "G", with a clean driving record. Salary Range:
Minimum $95,584 annually;
Maximum $139,231 annually
• 2022 rates (2023 adjustment TBD)
