Job Summary
The Museum of Anthropology has an international reputation as a leader in innovative and boundary-pushing research, teaching, exhibitions and programs. The Graphic Designer is responsible for developing and implementing the graphic language and visual brand for the Museum. This includes the design and layout of all graphic elements within exhibitions, and associated materials, as well as MOA-branded marketing and communications materials, both printed and electronic, such as member magazines, annual reports, internal signage and advertisements.
Organizational Status
The position reports to the Manager, Design, who is responsible for the conceptualization and implementation of two- and three-dimensional permanent and temporary exhibitions and visual presentations at MOA. The position also works closely and collaboratively with the Exhibit Fabrication Manager, to develop a cohesive look and feel for exhibit designs.
It also works closely with the Senior Marketing and... Communications Manager to create and oversee all MOA-branded marketing material.
A wide-latitude of decision-making is required.
Work Performed
• Contributes to the Graphic Design of all exhibition projects. Works with exhibition team members to determine the scope, requirements, schedules and milestones for graphic materials to ensure components are designed and produced within the overall exhibit schedule.
• Works closely and collaboratively the Manager, Design and Fabrication Manager to refine exhibit concepts; interpreting their concepts and ideas in order to provide creative options and solutions to deliver the envisioned result on time and on budget.
• Develops original dynamic and creative graphics packages for all major temporary exhibitions as well as other related projects within the museum. This includes choosing appropriate media, materials, color schemes, typography, graphic treatments, and layouts to achieve exhibition and project goals.
• Designs all 2D components of exhibitions including didactic panels, object labels, title and introduction walls, video animations, and wayfinding. This may also include original illustrations and map-making.
• Evaluates and selects artistic and photographic material and determines process requirements.
Prepares graphic proofs for review and works closely with curators and copy-editors to make necessary edits before going to production.
• Works with commercial printers to confirm requirements for production of larger scale or more complex graphic installations. Ensures design and layout work is prepared accurately and transmitted to printers to meet delivery deadlines. Oversees procurement and delivery of graphic material.
• Collaborates with auxiliary technical support staff hired to work on exhibition production/installation and printing, mounting and installation of exhibit labels, text panels, vinyl cut text and murals.
• Under direction of the Senior Marketing and Communications Manager, develops and oversees the design and production of all MOA-branded material to ensure it meets MOA s brand requirements and aesthetic standards.
• Designs a variety of museum graphic materials for temporary installations, performances and other activities at MOA as well as for external MOA projects.
• Designs promotional materials for the museum including MOA Magazine, ads, guides, annual reports, event invitations, posters, signage, banners and a variety of visitor material using MOA’s brand style guide.
• Recommends imagery for use on MOA website and in MOA ads.
• Creates and is responsible for all internal brand collateral including letterhead, envelopes, business cards, etc. This also includes print-production and templating.
• Supports staff in using all MOA-branded material.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The quality, integrity and accuracy of MOA exhibition and printed material produced by this position are critical to MOA s mandate and commitment to displaying objects to the highest cultural and professional standards. Design is a key component of the look and feel of museum galleries and exhibit graphics and marketing materials have direct impact on MOA s attendance and visitor enjoyment of the galleries. It is important that the graphic designer is fully integrated into the processes for exhibits and marketing materials and work closely with all relevant staff to ensure that projects are executed on time and within budget. Failure to complete a project within the estimated budget and/or timeframe will result in shortfalls in other areas of Museum s operations. Failure to complete a project on time has ramifications both internally and beyond the Museum.
Supervision Received
Considerable personal initiative is expected and a wide-latitude of decision making is permitted. The position reports to the Manager Design. Performance is judged by results (e.g. see consequence of error above).

Minimum Qualifications
Three year Graphic Design program. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
• University degree in a related discipline.
• Minimum of three years of related experience (in museums or other cultural institutions) or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong portfolio with demonstrated experience in a variety of projects and media.
• Experience in print and digital design for communications and marketing, as well as exhibition design and installation. Other museum experience an asset.
• Minimum of two years’ experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills:
• Professional command of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Aftereffects)
• Rendering graphic elements using traditional tools, multimedia, and image processing software.
• Typesetting and knowledge of working graphically in other languages, including those with different alphabets.
• Prepress and print production.
• Ability to efficiently organize and coordinate several projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work efficiently under deadline pressures and budget limitations.
• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a highly organized manner.
• Ability to think conceptually. (i.e., use creative, conceptual, or inductive reasoning or thought processes).
• Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
• Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail.
