EcoHealth Alliance seeks an experienced and motivated Science Writer and Communications Coordinator to produce diverse content for our public-facing communications, and to act as a point person for communication with reporters and the public.

The Science Writer and Communications Coordinator will work closely with EcoHealth Alliance’s President, Executive Team, science staff, and other team... members based in New York City and globally to identify and write articles, media postings, and press releases backed by sound details from EcoHealth Alliance science, policy, and other output, including other scientific sources. Writing must be accurate and fact-driven, but also targeted to an audience of journalists, science enthusiasts, and the public. This position requires a deep understanding of how science is portrayed in the media, and of EcoHealth Alliance’s goals in conservation and health. It also requires experience working with journalists who actively report on emerging diseases, One Health, and conservation science or policy. The Science Writer and Communications Coordinator should be passionate about storytelling and have a demonstrable background in written content. This position requires a high level of organizational skills, a keen eye for design, excellent written and oral communication skills, and an ability to prioritize as well as multi-task.

This position will oversee communications across a wide array of media for EcoHealth Alliance and support overall branding integrity and marketing materials across the organization, as well as proactive monitoring of media articles of relevance to EcoHealth Alliance. The chosen candidate will research, and draft articles intended for our digital publications including website and social media, as well as plan campaigns for our social media platforms.

The Science Writer and Communications Coordinator must be able to listen and rapidly divine the best means of communication for each audience whether internal or external to EcoHealth Alliance. Candidates must have a proven written content background derived from a solid public health or other relevant scientific background.

Responsibilities
• Writing research-based content to present EcoHealth Alliance work globally to general and targeted audiences
• Lead on the organization, writing, and editing of the content of press releases, website and/or social media and other public-facing content, and other publications to feature on EcoHealth Alliance’s website, annual reports, social media, blogs, and other platforms. Writing must be for a general audience, but employ solid background in the science behind the stories including ability to cite and reference as necessary
• Develop press contacts and place stories with targeted and effective outlets
• Develop communication channels and social media content strategy and campaigns
• Ensure consistency of EcoHealth Alliance’s brand, style, and tone across platforms and team members
• Manage and gather images and other content provided by science staff and other teams to use for various media channels
• Work directly with the president, senior leadership, and our internal team members on communication of technical topics including white papers and high-level panel discussion content
• Provide visual or textual reports to president and management teams describing effectiveness of social media, and other campaigns, events, and outreach
• Coordinate, minute, organize, and assist with journalist inquiries, public relations strategy and planning, and other press and outreach meetings
• Work with EcoHealth Alliance’s development team, organizers, board, administrative and executive teams, and the president to support fundraising activities including annual benefit, bi-annual appeals, donor updates, local and regional events based in New York City or Washington D.C. and other EcoHealth Alliance events or board related activities
• Proactively communicate and collaborate with internal and external teams to effectively resolve problems, improve workflow, and develop engaging content
• The position may require attendance of scientific conferences, collaborator events, press or funder meetings
• When working under deadlines or engaging with press and journalists or collaborators in other countries, this position will require work on some weekends, and long (early or late) days

Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in public health or related science
• Master’s degree in public health or related science a plus, not required
• Minimum of 3 years demonstrated experience in science-writing
• Experience working with journalists
• Capacity to synthesize scientific data and present it with clarity to a diverse audience
• Experience with Google Analytics and ability to adjust the content strategy based on data
• Capability to coordinate and multitask activities to meet shifting deadlines
• A history of working for or with science focused or scientific organizations and presenting or working with journalists and placing stories in high-level media sources
• Authoring and managing the production of scientific articles
• Ability to manage deadlines and quality of work with good organizational and interpersonal skills in a diverse team
• Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to organize and manage data
• Proven track record for increasing followers and engagement
• Passion for the social media industry and desire to be at the forefront
• Highest level of verbal and written communications skills in English
• Ability to work independently and efficiently with a high level of interpersonal skills, demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy, and a good sense of humor
• Attention to detail in composing and proofing materials
• Demonstrated ability to manage project schedules and resources and success developing web or other online content and strategies

Salary range: $65,000 – $75,000
