Description of Position

Situated at the University of Victoria Libraries, on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, and the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day, the Head, Engagement and Learning (HEL) provides collaborative leadership for library initiatives related to student academic success.

Using a team approach, the HEL leads a diverse group of employees in the development, implementation, delivery, and evaluation of UVic Libraries’ services and programming related to engagement and learning.This includes information services, library instruction and digital information fluency, librarian engagement and learning work, and orientation/first-year experience. The HEL chairs or is involved in relevant committees and task groups related to engagement and learning in the Libraries, and is responsible for... coordinating the UVic Libraries’ C.W. Lui Learning Commons.

The HEL supports the design and development of new programs, services, and initiatives that support engagement and learning through the Libraries, and takes leadership in evaluating their effectiveness, outcomes, and impact. UVic Libraries is committed to providing differentiated approaches to supporting learning, research, digital citizenship, and the critical and creative inquiry skills needed to navigate complex, information-rich environments in order to nurture adaptable, resilient, life-long learners.

The HEL reports to the Director, Engagement and Learning, who is a member of UVic Libraries’executive team. In collaboration with the Director, the HEL builds partnerships within the Libraries and with campus partners including the LTSI and Student Affairs.The HEL maintains positive relationships with existing partners and works towards building relationships with additional campus partners focused on students’ learning and academic support.

The HEL works closely with the Manager of Access Services on the development, implementation, and management of the Libraries’ integrated public service model to support students, faculty, staff, and community members with their library and research help needs.

Summary of Responsibilities
• Works to advance the Libraries’ Strategic Directions: Open, Engaged, Enduring
• Leads in the development of library instruction programming to support student learning and engagement and to promote students’ academic success
• Explores diverse modes and delivery models for library instruction, and makes evidence-based recommendations for adoption and implementation
• Develops, implements, and oversees academic support services via the C.W. Lui Learning Commons, and leads or participates in initiatives and projects regarding the Learning Commons
• Oversees the development and maintenance of the C.W. Lui Learning Commons website, in collaboration with colleagues
• Serves as Chair of the Learning Commons Operations Group, focused on creating effective communication among staff working in the Learning Commons and addressing the Learning Commons’ operational needs
• Oversees internal and external communication regarding the C.W. Lui Learning Commons, including promoting the Learning Commons to students and the broader campus
• Leads in the development and provision of future-oriented, evidence-based research help for users of the Libraries

Collaborates with colleagues to identify, recommend, and implement technology that supports the learning, information literacy, and research help needs of the Libraries’ users, especially in online, blended, and hybrid instruction modes
• Collaborates with colleagues on evidence-based assessment of engagement and learning services
• Collaborates with colleagues on initiatives related to orientation and the first-year experience
• Leads and supervises a diverse group of librarians, including providing regular feedback and overseeing planning and performance processes
• Supports the professional development of librarians and other staff in teaching and learning
• Keeps up-to-date with developments in the profession and related fields, and on broader issues that affect the practice of librarianship

Qualifications
• Master’s degree from an accredited school of library science, or a master’s or higher degree in another discipline with expertise and excellence in professional practice relevant to the position if the candidate agrees to complete an MLS from an accredited school of library science before the end of the probationary period (or the equivalent combination of education and experience in archival science in the case of an Archivist)
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population with differing needs and experiences
• Demonstrated experience working effectively in higher education
• Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and assessing instruction programs based on sound pedagogical approaches and learning theories
• Demonstrated experience with developing and delivering services and programming to support engagement and learning in a library setting
• Excellent interpersonal, written, & oral communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to maintain positive, productive, collaborative working relationships with multiple stakeholders
• Demonstrated ability to manage and complete projects on established timelines
• Demonstrated experience effectively managing a diverse team
• A demonstrated willingness to commit to ongoing learning and personal development opportunities related to evidence-based support for engagement and learning activities in an academic library setting

Participates in Libraries and University committees, councils, task forces, and teams as appropriate. Keeps up-to-date with developments in digital scholarship in the profession and related fields, and on broader issues that affect the practice of librarianship. Participates in professional organizations as appropriate. Undertakes research and engages in scholarship as appropriate.
