CounsellorINTRODUCTIONThe Counsellor will provide a comprehensive school counselling programme that addresses threedomains academic development career development and personal social development Utilizingleadership advocacy and collaboration The school Counsellor will promote student success providepreventive services and respond to identified student needs QUALIFICATIONSProfessional Training and Certification as outlined in Policy 530 1 Professional StaffQualifications Master s Degree in Counseling from an accredited universitypreferred Minimum of 3 years of successful counseling experience in schoolsStrong background in o Guidance curriculum developmento Diagnostic testingo Family and student counselingSKILLS COMPETENCIESProficient technology skillsStrong leadership and collaboration skillsOutstanding interpersonal skillsStrong oral and written communication skillsEmpathy and listening skillsAbility in presentationOrganizing and planning skillsProficient technology skills in above... key areas of counsellingStrong oral and written communication skillsAptitude to empathize with clients and help them shareGood time management skills Proven experience in developing effective treatment plans Language EnglishREPORTS TOPrincipalTERMS OF EMPLOYMENTInitial contracts are for 2 years Subsequent contracts are for 1 year 190 working days per year Salary is determined by placement on a salary grid o Salary grid categories follow the guidelines in Policy 530 1 Professional StaffQualification PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIESDemonstrate professional competence and vision1 Guidance Curriculuma Provide leadership and collaborate with other staff in the implementation ofguidance curriculum b Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented groupactivities to meet student needs and school goals c Incorporate life skills into the guidance programme 2 Individual Student Planninga Assist in the admission process by conducting interviews as required b Make recommendations for student placement based on personal socialdevelopment criteria c Assist with the orientation of new students d Assist with the transition of students within the school to new teachers tonew divisions etc e Assist all students individually or in groups with developing academic careerand personal social skills goals and plans f Accurately and appropriately interpret and utilize student data g Collaborate with parents and educators to assist students with educational career and life planning 3 Preventive and Responsive Servicesa Provide individual and group counseling to students with identified concernsand needs b Provides intervention services during crisis situations c Develop school-wide crisis protocols and serve on crisis management teams d Consult and collaborate with parents teachers administrators and othercommunity resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs e Assist teachers in the development of individual behavior managementtechniques f Provide workshops for parents on topics that help promote positiveadjustments and school success for their children g Provide workshops for teachers related to social emotional and behavioraldevelopment of students h Implement an effective referral and follow-up process i Accurately and appropriately implement assessment procedures fordetermining and structuring individual and group counseling services orinterventions 4 System Supporta Provide appropriate information to school personnel related to the schoolcounseling programme b Assist teachers parents and other stakeholders in interpreting andunderstanding student data c Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge andskills d Use available technology resources to enhance the school counselingprogramme e Adhere to ethical standards of the school counseling profession Communicate effectivelya Speak clearly honestly and respectfully b Give and receive feedback to improve performance c Exercise tact when discussing student deficiencies or dysfunction with staff orparents d Maintain confidentiality when required Demonstrate stewardshipe Use all school resources wisely f Deliberately teach students to use resources wisely and to respect all property Demonstrate organizational skillsg Establish well defined routines and procedures for accomplishing duties h Maintain accurate records for meetings with students parents and teachers i Maintain accurate confidential records for students receiving services fromthe counseling department j Attend all meetings i e staff meetings amp parent meetings consistently andpunctually Build community within and outside the schoolk Support administrators fellow teachers and support staff l Adhere to school policies and procedures m Meet with staff members to listen learn and exchange advice for helpingstudents meet the goals of the school n Model and encourage cultural awareness and understanding Others1 Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate superior
