WOOLLEN MILL INTERPRETER

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?
You will:
• Interpret and demonstrate the life, work, skills and activities of a mid 19th century skilled textile worker in an operating woollen mill at Upper Canada Village
• Operate, demonstrate, and help to maintain the mill’s machinery
• Participate in the delivery and support of youth programs & other Village features, events & programs
• Produce and promote saleable products manufactured in the woollen mill
• Interpret village life and the features of a small rural 1860’s village
• Support Upper Canada... Village programming and customer service initiatives
• Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site
• Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests
HOW DO I QUALIFY?
MANDATORY:
• Conditional upon successful candidate being granted required security clearance for this position (Vulnerable Service Sector check).
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
• Knowledge and the ability to perform a wide range of historical tasks of a textile worker, e.g. operating, adjusting, and maintaining the mill’s machinery (boiler, wash tanks and dye vats, pickers, carding machines, spinning jack, looms, doubling frame, fulling and napping machines).
• The ability to perform maintenance, repair and other duties such as trimming and lacing belts, lubricating, aligning and adjusting mill machinery, washing wool, and sweeping.
• An understanding of the social, economic, and political environment to a level typical of a textile mill worker of the mid 19th century.
• Knowledge and an understanding of the products produced and the associated production standards.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to identify and report any potential hazards or needed repairs, and to take corrective action where possible. Ability to learn and follow safety and emergency procedures appropriate to the location and activities performed.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
You have:
• Demonstrated excellent oral communication and interpretive skills to be able to speak and present information to large number of visitors of varied ages, backgrounds and abilities.
• The ability to resolve visitor concerns and respond to questions in a friendly and respectful manner
• The ability to engage and work effectively with youth.
OTHER SKILLS
You have:
• The ability to conduct historical research related to this role.
• The ability to perform the physical duties required by the position.
