Research Assistant - Microbiology and Immunology (Butler Lab)

This Research Assistant position is in the laboratory of Dr. Noah Butler in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. We are seeking a full-time research assistant to conduct research focused on evaluating the regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses in animal models or parasitic, bacterial and viral infections.

Duties to include:

Manage mouse colonies and animal husbandry operations; genotype/phenotype mice.
Perform infection of mice with parasites, bacteria, and viruses using Biosafety Level 1 (BSL1) containment . Evaluate the efficacy of immune modulatory therapeutics to inhibit pathogen replication.
Perform mouse experiments using Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) containment protocols and handling infectious agents;
Training will be provided for handling mice in ABSL
2.
Perform routine experimental procedures in the animal models, observe for signs of phenotype, illness, injury or stress. Execute basic medical treatments of the mice, including the administration of drugs.
Harvest mouse tissue including blood and primary and secondary lymphoid organs as needed.
Collect and track data in an organized and logical manner, keep data records up to date, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used. Maintain cell lines by feeding, splitting/passaging, and cryopreservation/storage.
Assist with general laboratory maintenance duties, including help with organizing, cleaning, maintaining stock solutions and reagents.
Ensure the laboratory remains functional and organized, and that research integrity is maintained.
Be involved in the preparation and dissemination of scientific manuscripts and presentations,
Regularly discuss progress and any problems encountered.
Present research progress at laboratory meetings.
Maintain a clean work area.

Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Cell biology, or Biology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience (6 months) in mouse husbandry and colony management.

Experience with mouse models of infection and immunity, blood collections, i.v. inoculations.

Experience with molecular biology, PCR, and genotyping assays.

Experience with multi-parameter spectral flow cytometry and Flo-Jo software.

Experience with mammalian cell culture and sterile techniques.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills

Experience with Microsoft Office, Prism and Transnetyx Colony software.

Experience managing the schedules junior staff.

Ability to work independently while being reliable and efficient with time management.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience and previous training in mouse models of infection and immunity.
Experience in updating, amending, and managing IACUC protocols.
Experience maintaining laboratory equipment and operations.
