Job Summary The Clinical Extern Mentor role is a Ministry of Health funded role as part of the Enhanced Extern Program. This role will work closely with the Clinical Extern Program Lead. It is designed for a registered practical nurse who will support the education and development of the Clinical Externs, provide mentorship, support, and improve team integration. This role may require shifts at the main hospital site and the RCU site.

Primary Responsibilities
• Support integration of Clinical Externs at the organizational and unit level
• Support unit teams to collaborate with Clinical Externs to provide required patient care
• Aid in integration of team processes and role clarity
• Assist Clinical Externs to become familiar with the work in their area of practice
• Maintain regular unit presence to support ongoing education needs and tracking of required skills attainment
• Create, adapt and deliver orientation and learning resources
• Contribute to Clinical Extern onboarding
• Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluations of Clinical Extern role
• Promote Clinical Extern staff wellness and team well-being
• Serve as a liaison and conduit between the unit leadership, Professional Practice and Operations.

Qualifications
• Registered Practical Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Minimum of 5 years' experience within the past 2 years in frontline care in various inpatient medical/surgical hospital clinical settings which may include medicine, surgery, cancer or palliative care required
• Excellent clinical skills and competencies

• Previous experience teaching, working with learners and/or preceptoring required
• Previous experience as Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor preferred
• Demonstrates excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload
• Demonstrates understanding of infection prevention and control practices
• Demonstrates conflict resolution skills
• Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all
