Our multi-site hospital has over 1,400 beds and we offer world-leading expertise in many areas, including cardiac and stroke care, cancer care, palliative care and pediatrics.

The Call Centre is vital service within the Health Information Technology Services (HITS) portfolio, providing essential communication links in a timely, professional and efficient manner to both internal and external clients through switchboard, paging services, information desk, alarm monitoring and dispatching of emergency codes, physician on- call roster and a regional physician answering service.

Position Summary

As a member of the HITS Call Centre department, the switchboard operator is responsible to provide services to clients by facilitating communications at Hamilton Health Sciences and regionally through: rapid, accurate and courteous processing of all calls (switchboard, answering service, patient information, etc.), operation of hospital paging equipment, as well as overhead, emergency and regular paging, monitoring of alarm computer, processing incoming trouble calls and dispatching and implementation of emergency code procedures, entering rosters into the Startel system for all on call disciplines, and other clerical duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Grade 12 education
2. Keyboarding 40 wpm (subject to testing)
3. Medical terminology certificate or demonstrated knowledge equivalent to the Medical terminology certificate
4. Knowledge & skills in using computers, including Window based systems: MS Office - Outlook, Word, Excel;
Windows 97 or higher
5. Demonstrated knowledge of a hospital switchboard system preferred
6. Familiarity with and confidence using a public address system considered a strong asset
6. Appreciates the confidentiality of the position
7. Excellent communication skills
8. Tact and discretion in dealing with all levels of staff, strong organizational and interpersonal skills for organizing and prioritizing work based on the acuity of the situation
9. Demonstrated initiative and able to work independently, under pressure and in a fast paced, multi-task environment and assist others as a team player
