Pay: $17.45/hour
The Saratoga Regional YMCA is hiring for Outdoor Recreation Staff and we are excited to have you join our team! This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Individuals will need to be able to provide a fun, personally challenging growth experience for all outdoor recreation participants.
An Outdoor Recreation Instructor creates a safe, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals promoting safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. An Outdoor Recreation Instructor is part facilitator, mentor, teacher and technician.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provide excellent customer service, being friendly and attentive to all guests and campers.
Be physically, mentally, and emotionally present during events.
Show competency in the technical skills associated with the Outdoor Recreation operation.
Display leadership in debriefing and closure for each activity.
Demonstrate confidence when speaking in front of groups, including participants and other staff.
Maintain and inventory equipment before and after each event.
Ensure the safety of each participant and demonstrate a clear understanding of the risks involved in each activity.
Clearly instruct the facilitation of games, initiatives, and all other Outdoor Recreation activities.
Complete daily paperwork documenting operations and properly handling incidents per SRYMCA policy.
Use sound judgment to ensure safety throughout every event.
Handle unexpected circumstances and manage groups effectively.
Perform physically demanding work in the outdoors under harsh weather conditions, on uneven terrain, and at heights.
Have skills verified by an accredited ACCT organization for working on the Ropes Course.
Be team-oriented and dedicated to the goals set by the SRYMCA Outdoor Recreation department.
Work collaboratively with co-facilitators and visiting teachers.
Work with diverse groups of people and various group sizes.
Complete daily inspections.
Understand and be able to setup and take down Outdoor Recreation elements and store them properly.
Regularly review ropes facilitation techniques.
Regularly review and practice emergency procedures.
Keep the physical area clean and clear of any hazardous materials.
Communicate any potential concerns or hazards to leadership.
All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Excellent human relation skills and communication skills.
Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. The ability to articulate and model YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility is essential.
Previous experience with belay techniques and facilitating groups, and commitment to skill practice sessions and certification trainings.
Mental and emotional maturity to create safe, positive atmospheres for the personal experience and growth of participants.
Arrive an hour before an event and plan on an hour after an event.
Willingness to work weekends in addition to weekday events.
Maintain the following certifications: CPR Pro, First Aid, Presidium “Child Abuse Prevention” Training, Adventure Course Level 1 Certification, Wilderness First Aid (as needed), Wilderness 1st Responder (as needed).
