Short Description
This posting is for a Product Development Scientist in the Performance Films Technology group of Eastman Chemical Company located in Shanghai, China. The position will have responsibility for research and product development supporting existing and developing new products related to film applications including architectural, automotive, and functional films. This role does involve customer and supplier engagement in the development of new opportunities. The scientist will be planning and conducting research experiments in order to analyze specific data and interpret results for advancing to larger scale-up within our manufacturing sites. The selected individual for this position will also be responsible to understand market needs to develop new and/or improved film-based product concepts that lead to commercial products. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively and function in an innovative, fast-paced, cross functional team environment.
Responsibilities
Develop a fundamental understanding of the functional attributes of a wide range of thermoplastic materials used in the construction and application of functional films
Conduct feasibility analyses and provide constructive feedback on prospective projects/technologies
Identify needs and opportunities through discussion with customers, sales, and marketing personnel with the ability to translate into innovative product solutions
Define, develop, and test new innovative products using product development process in accordance with design control
Develop research plan and design experiments according to company’s timetable and translate into detailed technical work plans for safe and effective execution
Drive the Design process from conception to pilot testing, scale up, and commercialization
Establish protocols to quantify film properties as related to end use performance
Data driven mindset to product development and research.
Support the transfer of technology from laboratory to pilot line and then to production line, including participation on cross functional teams
Identify technical difficulties and develop alternate strategies to product development
Write patents, technical market support literature, technical presentations, and publications, including internal research for publication, and support/liaison for external research conducted in line with the organization’s research strategy
Prepare and present written and oral reports to communicate with management, production, marketing, sales, and related functions

Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Polymer Science/Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry with 5+ years of related industrial experience, or a Master's degree in Polymer Science/Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry with 10+ years of related industrial experience.
Demonstrated product development experience with plastic films made from extrusion or related polymer fields.
Knowledge of film conversion techniques, including lamination and coating processes.
Knowledge of physical properties, especially mechanical properties of polymeric materials.
Understanding of structure-property relationships of polymeric materials.
Strong knowledge of surface characterization techniques and design of experiments.
Knowledge of adhesion science fundamentals and key analytical characterization tools for adhesion is critical.
Experience in sputtering or equivalent processes.
Experience with film-based roll-to-roll processes is highly preferred.
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
Ability to communicate with various groups such as marketing, manufacturing, regulatory, QA/QC, supply chain, customer service, sales, and external customers and suppliers.
Willingness to travel to manufacturing sites and supplier visits.
