MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
• Possession of a high school or equivalency diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
• Compliance with the NYS Security Guard registration and training requirements as defined in the Security Guard Act of 1992, Article 7 and 7a, as amended.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be eligible to sit for the upcoming Security Assistant civil service exam
• Bilingual preferred; at a minimum, the ability to understand and to make one’s self understood to all Spanish speaking individuals.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
• Ensures the safety and security of an assigned area by enforcing established procedures;
• Patrols assigned building(s), building perimeter, and adjacent school district parking lots to prevent illegal trespass by unauthorized individuals;
• Enforces the identification system and prevents unauthorized visitors from entering school buildings and/or loitering on school grounds;
• Ascertains individuals’ business on school property and responds accordingly;
• May escort students or visitors to/from areas of building;
• Conducts security inspections of school facilities/sites; Assists in handling emergency disciplinary matters;
• May, under specifically defined and limited circumstances, use force; May prepare reports of incidents.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS. ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:
• Good knowledge of modern practices, procedures and techniques employed in maintaining building and site security; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, and the general public; skill in observing and detecting unusual occurrences or behavior; ability to follow directions; sound judgment; tact; courtesy; ability to perform in a reasonable manner the essential function of the position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS:
• In accordance with the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for appointment in school districts must obtain clearance for employment from the State Education Department prior to employment based upon a fingerprint and criminal history background check.

In accordance with Chapter 508 of the Laws of 2002, and Section 89-n, subdivision 4 of the General Business Law provides that State Correction Officers having the powers of peace officers qualify without having to meet the above stated training requirement as defined in the Security Act of 1993. Police Officers retired for more than ten years must submit proof of completion of an 8-hour training course approved by the Commissioner of the NY State Division of Criminal Justice Services.
