Job Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Alignment Technician is responsible for diagnosing and performing wheel alignment services on large, heavy-duty machinery and vehicles. This includes using specialized equipment to ensure that vehicles are aligned according to manufacturer specifications, and making necessary adjustments to maintain performance, safety, and longevity of the equipment.
Compensation: $38-45/ hour plus structured bonus program
Key Responsibilities:
Diagnose Alignment Issues: Perform inspections to identify misalignments, tire wear patterns, and other mechanical issues with heavy equipment.
Operate Alignment Equipment: Use specialized, high-precision alignment tools and computerized systems to measure wheel alignment, camber, caster, and toe angles of heavy machinery.
Adjust Alignment Systems: Make adjustments to steering and suspension components, including axles, tires, and the equipment’s frame to restore proper alignment.
Inspect and Maintain Equipment: Regularly check and maintain alignment equipment, ensuring that all tools are in good working condition and calibrated accurately.
Test Equipment Performance: Perform test runs on equipment to confirm that alignment adjustments have been successfully completed and that the machinery operates smoothly.
Troubleshoot Mechanical Issues: Diagnose and resolve alignment problems related to components like tires, axles, steering systems, and other related parts.
Customer Communication: Communicate alignment issues and solutions to clients, offering detailed reports and recommendations for repairs or ongoing maintenance.
Keep Detailed Records: Document all services performed, including alignment measurements, adjustments made, parts used, and the overall condition of the machinery.
Ensure Safety Standards: Follow all workplace safety protocols, ensuring a safe working environment while working with heavy and sometimes hazardous equipment.
Maintain Work Area: Ensure the alignment shop or service area is clean, organized, and free of hazards, and keep tools and machinery in good condition.
Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Skills: Proficient in using specialized heavy equipment alignment tools and diagnostic machinery.
Mechanical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of heavy equipment systems, including suspension, axles, wheels, and steering components.
Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose complex alignment issues and determine effective solutions.
Attention to Detail: Capable of making precise measurements and adjustments to ensure accurate wheel alignment.
Customer Service Skills: Ability to explain technical issues to clients clearly and provide recommendations in layman's terms.
Physical Stamina: Capable of working in physically demanding environments, including lifting heavy parts, and working in tight or confined spaces.
Computer Proficiency: Comfort with using computerized alignment systems and basic software for record-keeping and diagnostic purposes.
Safety-Conscious: Strong awareness of safety protocols and commitment to a safe working environment.
Education and Experience:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical or vocational training in heavy equipment mechanics or automotive technology is highly preferred.
Certifications: Heavy Equipment Technician or Automotive Technician certification, or similar certifications in alignment services, is an advantage. Commercial driver’s license is an asset. Valid driver’s license is required.
Experience: At least two years of experience working with heavy machinery, construction equipment, or similar vehicles. Experience in wheel alignment and suspension systems is highly valued.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs or more).
Comfortable working in challenging positions (e.g., under heavy machinery, crouching, or bending).
Ability to work outdoors or in environments with variable weather conditions.
Work Environment:
Often works in the service shop.
Work is typically performed in physically demanding conditions, including outdoor environments, confined spaces, and noisy settings.
May be required to work in shifts, including nights or weekends, depending on business needs.
