Role overview

As a design consultant at Wandsworth Electrical, you’ll bring your expertise in interior design and FF&E to a role that combines design with technical insight. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced designer looking to transition into a consultative position where creativity, innovation, and client collaboration come together. Working across London, you’ll spend four days a week partnering with architects and designers on-site or virtually, and one day at Wandsworth HQ or from home. Your goal will be to help clients realise their visions through bespoke solutions in switches, sockets, and lighting control systems.

In this role, you’ll work as an extension of each client’s design team, combining your creative flair with our customisable products to ensure each specification perfectly complements the overall scheme. You’ll collaborate closely with our engineering, sales, and marketing teams to bring innovative product ideas to life, based on the feedback and insights you gain from your clients. This role also involves building and nurturing relationships with design studios across London, establishing Wandsworth as the go-to for distinctive electrical solutions.

What success looks like:
• establishing and maintaining a network of at least 20 practices or studios within the first year
• meeting specification targets, contributing to the team’s overall sales goals
• creating a strong specification pipeline, aligned with Wandsworth production capabilities

Duties and responsibilities

Partnership management:
• design collaboration: Work closely with clients to create custom solutions in switches, sockets, and lighting controls, through both on-site and online design consultations. Deliver samples and prototypes to clients to refine concepts into strong, feature rich specifications
• specification development: Serve as the primary advisor through the specification process, ensuring that each product selection reflects the client’s design vision
• client Network Building: Establish and maintain relationships with at least 20 design studios and practices within the first year, fostering a network of partners
• product expertise and customisation: Apply your knowledge of Wandsworth’s product range and customisation options to offer solutions that elevate client designs and provide valuable feedback to our product development team
• cross-team collaboration: Work closely with our sales, engineering, and marketing teams to develop bespoke client solutions and support marketing initiatives that promote Wandsworth’s design services
• presentation and client engagement: Confidently conduct one-to-one meetings and small group presentations, bringing Wandsworth’s offerings to life for design professionals

Market research and client engagement:
• conduct comprehensive industry research to identify potential customers and key players, initiate contact, and nurture relationships
• visit existing and prospective clients, offering design consultations, detailed product awareness and tailored training sessions to showcase the advantages and features of our products and services
• work closely with internal colleagues to produce the relevant documents to support your customer’s needs
• build a strong technical knowledge of our products and solutions as well as an understanding of our key competitors product portfolio

Sales strategy:
• using an entrepreneurial approach, win at every opportunity, build a specification first culture
• create demand for all Wandsworth products, drive the promotion of our partnership offerings and work closely with clients to identify and solve design, functionality, and cost-related challenges, ensuring our products align with the specific needs and goals of each project
• participate in local trade groups/networking events for influencers
• meet or exceed aggressive growth targets
• maintain an up to date diary and detailed records of meetings, managing your time to create a strong pipeline of specifications

Bonus

In addition to the basic salary, this role has access to a performance based bonus.

Enhanced holiday allowance

We give our team an enhanced holiday entitlement of 26 days, plus bank holidays, totalling 34 days total. There is an option to carry over up to five days into the following year.

Person specification

Essential

Experience:
• minimum of four years’ experience in interior design, with a strong FF&E background and ideally experience specifying electrical products

Skills and knowledge:
• exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage in face-to-face client interactions
• strong understanding of FF&E processes, including material selection, sourcing, and sustainability
• customer-focused mindset, dedicated to understanding client needs and delivering tailored solutions
• proven ability to create tailored design solutions with a refined sense of aesthetics
• creative and tenacious approach to securing our products in instances where competitor products are specified
• confident and engaging presenter, skilled at bringing technical and aesthetic details to life in ways that inspire clients

Personal qualities:
• willingness to travel extensively, mainly across the South of England to engage with clients
• adaptability to leverage various communication channels, including face-to-face, video, and telephone meetings and product awareness sessions
• ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritise tasks to maximise opportunities
• target-driven and motivated by achieving and exceeding sales goals

Desirable

Qualifications:
• relevant qualifications – design, architecture, or a related field

Experience:
• demonstrable success in building and maintaining client relationships, preferably with architects, specifiers, or designers. Client-facing experience within luxury residential, hospitality, or commercial design sectors
• experience or knowledge in electrical accessories, interior design, and lighting design

Skills and knowledge:
• strong negotiation skills to drive successful outcomes and secure product specifications
