Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities

Fairmont State University’s mission is to educate engaged citizens
in a community distinguished by opportunity, growth, and
achievement, delivering transformational impact for West Virginia
and beyond. To inform this work, the University is seeking a
director or Executive Director of Institutional Research. This key
leader and collaborator on campus will be an advocate for data and
its role in achieving university and student success.

The Director of Institutional Research will be ambitious,
entrepreneurial, optimistic, collaborative, responsive, and possess
a keen eye for detail. The incumbent will be skilled in the art of
storytelling through data. She or he will bring an understanding of
trends in higher education and expertise in measures of student,
academic, enrollment, financial, and institutional success. They
will have a familiarity with multiple platforms and software
packages that house university data and they will be quick and
proactive learners, able to anticipate knowledge gaps and address
them before they become critical. Knowing the power of information
and data, the incumbent will ensure that institutional data are
current, accurate, accessible, and delivered in formats that are
user-friendly. He or she will bring experience and expertise in
data visualization tools like Microsoft Power BI. Through the
Director’s work in democratizing our data, campus departments will
have the access they need to make data-informed decisions through
actionable.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Directing the collection, analysis, interpretation and
application of all relevant institutional data and the preparation
of documentation, reports, and survey responses for characterizing
institutional profile(s), strategic planning, decision support,
assessment, continuous improvement and overall institutional
effectiveness.
• Directing data collection, review, organization, recording,
conversion and related activities related to overall institutional
effectiveness.
• Serving as an essential and strategic team member in helping
Fairmont State University realize our goals and objectives as they
relate to effective institutional processes and procedures.
• Conducting, supervising, and coordinating institutional studies
and assessment including enrollment trends, retention and degree
completion; developing, implementing, and maintaining systems for
collecting and generating vital statistics; analyzing and
interpreting, and producing reports for planning, policy making,
and quality assurance.
• Collaborating with the appropriate faculty and staff in
developing methods for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data
needed for institutional assessment including course and program
learning outcomes, institutional effectiveness, strategic planning,
and program evaluation purposes.
• Supporting and recommending processes, procedures, policy and
professional development for effective courses, program, and
institutional assessment.
• Leading and contributing to the development of annual
institutional reports.
• Coordinating work elements and making recommendations that
ensure data integrity, effective institutional research, and the
overall improvement in all types of institutional data
quality.
• Evaluating and recommending adjustments to tools and plans to
ensure the continuous improvements of the institution’s
effectiveness.
• Participation in related institutional committees and projects
as needed for fulfillment of institutional metric targets,
activities, and objectives designed to achieve system-wide
goals.
• Coordinate with senior leadership in special initiatives and
collaborative approaches to affect the achievement of institutional
goals, objectives and strategic initiatives.
• Remaining current with accreditation and data reporting
requirements of the HLC, HEPC, IPEDs, and other receivers of
institutional data.
• Conducting all IPEDs reporting.
• Disseminating or otherwise making available to the public
institutional data, program student learning outcomes, and other
relevant information.
• Performing special studies and projects, leading institutional
initiatives and/or performing other duties as assigned by the Chief
of Staff.

Supervisory Requirements:
• As supervisor, the Director is responsible for providing
training, support, and advocacy, direction, encouragement, and
overall excellent work environment for assigned staff members
(student employees, graduate assistants, full or part-time
employees).
• The Director will establish clear expectations, goals, and
objectives for the Office of Institutional Research.
• The Director will provide regular evaluations of assigned
employees, giving them constructive and timely feedback that
supports employees growing as professionals and advancing the
mission of the office and Fairmont State University.

Minimum Required Education

Master’s degree in a relevant field from accredited institution (a
bachelor’s degree with substantial progress towards a Master’s
degree, along with significant, relevant experience may be
considered).

Minimum Required Qualifications
• Three to five (3-5) years or more experience in data analytics,
reporting, and institutional research at the post-secondary
education level with responsibilities directly related to this
position (i.e. performing, coordinating, and analyzing
institutional research using computer applications, large
databases, statistical packages, data visualization tools, and
conducting institutional research).
• Proficiency and experience using a variety of software/database
applications, platforms or systems, to include Ellucian (Banner),
Technolutions (Slate), Blackboard, Power BI, Qualtrics, Watermark,
ARGOS, SQL, EAB (Navigate), etc.

Preferred Qualifications
• Supervisory experience in an Office of Institutional Research
and/or Effectiveness at an accredited college or university.
• Terminal degree in a relevant field from an accredited
institution.
• Successful experience serving as the responsible officer
providing reporting and data to state and federal agencies.
• Successful experience partnering with a state higher education
agency or commission (e.g., West Virginia Higher Education Policy
Commission).
• Successful experience with and knowledge of state higher
education funding models/formulas and related data tracking and
reporting.
• Successful experience developing internal self-service data
reports using Power BI
