City of Mesquite Volunteer Statement
The City of Mesquite recognizes the value of volunteers as a resource to expand and increase the quality of its services in the community. Many volunteers have skills, talents and expertise to offer. Volunteerism is also recognized as an educational, recreational or social program because of the benefits that individuals can gain from volunteering. The City of Mesquite encourages and provides opportunities for the participation of volunteers.
Summary:
Perform a variety of tasks depending on project deadlines. This will include answering phone and other administrative/clerical tasks assigned by a supervisor.
Essential Duties:
• Answer phones and directs calls
• Greet guests and directs them to the appropriate location
• Answers questions about the City's services
• Data entry
• Help prepare bulk mailing
• Filing
• Maintenance of office space
• Other duties as assigned
• Other duties specifically around coordination of special events, or as assigned
Volunteer Rights and Responsibilities
Volunteers are viewed as a valuable resource to the City of Mesquite's department staff and to the public. Volunteers shall be extended the right to be given meaningful assignments, to be treated as equal co-workers, to receive effective supervision, to full involvement and participation, and recognition for work done. In return, volunteers shall commit to actively agree to perform their duties to the best of their abilities and to remain loyal to the goals and procedures of the City of Mesquite.

• Be courteous and personable when dealing with the public/customers
• Be self-directed, willing to take initiative, and detail-oriented
• Respect and maintain confidentiality of City of Mesquite employees

Scope of Volunteer Involvement
Volunteers may be utilized in all City of Mesquite departments. Volunteers may serve at all levels of skill and may participate in decision making. Volunteers should not, in general, be utilized to displace any fulltime or regular part-time employees from their position.
Volunteer Criteria
Volunteers should be in a good physical/mental health. They should enjoy working with the public and display interest in people and their work. Volunteers may be required to be finger-printed and subject to a background check prior to beginning their volunteer experience, as may be required by State law.

Time Commitment:
Hours are flexible to accommodate schedule
Support:
Training for this position will be provided. In addition, supervisory staff will be available for questions and assistance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Drug Screening, Fingerprinting and/or other background checks may be required based on assignment. Prior to operating a City vehicle, a volunteer must possess and maintain a Nevada or "border state" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483. and undergo a DMV check. Other qualifications/certifications may be required depending on assignment. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Attitudes are of utmost importance when serving the public. Volunteers are representative of the City of Mesquite. Volunteers should conduct themselves in a polite, professional, and progressive manner at all times.
Service at the Discretion of the Agency
The City of Mesquite generally accepts the services of all volunteers with the understanding that such service is at the sole discretion of the agency. Volunteers agree that the agency may at any time, for whatever reason, decide to terminate the volunteer's relationship with the City of Mesquite.
