Operating under broad supervision and following medical guidelines, this role encompasses conducting operations related to respiratory care. The role calls for exercising significant judgment in alignment with the physician's prescribed treatment plan and within the established policies of the department. Tasks include managing patient/family, responsibly handling resources, coordinating care, and instituting discharge plans when necessary.
This position involves:
- Assessing the condition of the resident
- Administering the prescribed therapies and aerosolized medications
- Closely monitoring and documenting the resident's progress in response to the therapeutic techniques and any adverse reactions to medications and therapies
- Delivering in-house training sessions to residents, family members, and facility staff
The main group of residents consists largely of adults and geriatrics. Using knowledge about growth and development ensures adequate care catering to the distinctive physical and psychological needs of each resident.
Key Responsibilities:
- Initiation, supervision, and maintenance of life support systems within the skilled nursing facility, including handling airway care and controlling artificial ventilator status as per pre-determined protocols
- Upholding and troubleshooting mechanical ventilators, and participating in cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures
- Starting, overseeing, and documenting various respiratory care techniques
- Performing a comprehensive assessment of residents' cardiopulmonary status, leveraging skills such as physical assessment, lab findings, radiological chest studies, pulmonary function tests, and professional judgment
- Administering relevant technical respiratory care procedures and ensuring best therapy outcomes
- Carrying out regular equipment inspections and tests, maintaining required equipment stock, and performing administrative duties
- Contributing to emergency cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as part of the emergency team
- Commencing, administering, evaluating, and documenting all therapeutical modalities ordered by a physician
- Identifying any adverse reactions in residents to therapy and responding accordingly
- Ensuring all resident care services rendered are systematically documented as part of their medical record
The prospective Respiratory Therapist should possess a deep understanding of respiratory therapy, should have completed an NBRC-approved and accredited program, and should hold at least one year of clinical practice experience under medical supervision. Candidates must hold a current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification and a current State Licensure for a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
