Summary
The Public Health Educator is responsible for developing health education projects and promoting health education awareness among schools, civic groups, communities, and training health educators. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Defines specific educational objectives for developing community awareness and support for public health programs and services through consultation with division directors and administrators. Designs and conducts community assessments to gauge community attitudes and awareness of health services, and analyzes statistical public health information, to define the need for developing and distributing educational media. Plans and implements educational programs, and develops criteria, staffing, and material requirements to reach program objectives, departmental goals, and to address the public health problems of defined target groups. Evaluates the effectiveness of health education within assigned areas of responsibility, using pre and post program data to measure a program's effectiveness against pre-established goals and objectives. Collaborates with and provides technical assistance and advice to community groups, public agencies, and professional organizations, confers with schools and universities, provides training on program planning and evaluation, and develops and maintains resource files to accommodate requests for speakers, films, and literature. Conducts and/or arranges in-service training to keep departmental staff informed of current trends in public health education and the work of other agencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of health education. Ability to plan, arrange, and conduct educational programs and service activities. Ability to research, prepare, and/or explain educational or informational materials and literature. Ability to provide training and instructions. Ability to evaluate data and prepare reports.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a bachelors degree in health education or other program related fields. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
