The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea invites you to apply for the full time position of:MAINTENANCE WORKER IAnnual Salary plus Excellent Benefits$61,484.80 - $74,734.40Applications will be reviewed on:December 6, 2024The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea is looking for a maintenance worker to perform a variety of routine unskilled or semi-skilled manual duties that involve the maintenance and repair of ...streets, parks, public facility grounds, forests, and beaches.The Ideal CandidateCandidates who are successful in this position demonstrate a strong commitment to public service and customer service; possess excellent verbal communication, decision-making and conflict resolution skills; and can work effectively with moderate degree of independence; are self-assured with the ability to exercise a high degree of common sense and sound judgment; and follow instructions. The ideal candidate is also able to meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.Examples of Important and Essential Duties• Perform maintenance and repair work on streets and sidewalks; remove damaged paving; compact, fill, repave, and repair paved surfaces with asphalt, concrete, decomposed granite, brick, and interlocking pavers; make periodic inspections and perform maintenance on structures and equipment in City parks and at the beach.• Remove weeds and trim other plant growth along streets, sidewalks, and rights-of-way to ensure access, draining, and vehicle sight distance requirements; remove debris from gutters, drop inlets, culverts, and manholes; maintain storm drain system; bury or otherwise properly dispose of marine animals washing up on the beach.• Perform flagging or other traffic control in maintenance projects and in emergency situations; assist Police and Fire Departments in containing and cleaning hazardous materials spills in the public rights-of-way.• Operate dump or trash trucks in hauling road materials to job sites and debris and trash to land fill.• Clean beach areas of broken glass, cans, paper, and other debris; empty trash receptacles.• Clean restrooms at beaches, parks, tennis courts, and public works yard; unstop toilets and drains when required.• Clean City sidewalks with water tanker truck.• Set up and take down special City events.• Perform planting, digging, raking, hauling, and related duties.• Repair and build handrails and fences in City parks and walkways.• Assist with traffic marking painting, cement work, and tree trimming or removal as necessary; assist with storm damage clean-up and repair.• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.Knowledge of:• Methods, materials, and equipment used in general maintenance work.]• Safe work practices.• Safe driving principles and practices.Skill to:• Operate a variety of maintenance tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.• Operate a motor vehicle safely.• Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in unfavorable weather conditions.Ability to:• Perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of maintenance activities.• Perform duties in a manner to maximize public safety in the area of work assigned.• Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Experience and Training Guidelines:Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying.
