Summary

Under close supervision, performs service work of considerable difficulty by providing crisis and court assistance to victims of crime, and performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

• Provides trauma-informed advocacy services for program participants.
• Answers crisis calls, aid in the development of a safety plan for survivors, assess immediate needs, facilitate intake and/or make referrals as necessary.
• Participates in rotating on-call after hour crisis calls and crisis intervention.
• Assesses survivors' immediate needs and develops service goals and a plan that assists survivors in obtaining and/or refers them to those who can help them obtain appropriate legal, shelter, employment, transportation, financial assistance, counseling, medical and/or mental health services, and other services in keeping with assessed needs and established goals.
• Provides assistance and referrals to agencies specializing in immigration, child abuse, elder abuse, sexual abuse, and/or disabilities.
• Provides culturally sensitive services to all victims and their families, including women, men, children, LGBTQ+, and victims of diverse ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds.
• Provides information regarding victim rights and victim compensation.
• Accompanies victims when interacting with members of the legal system, including law enforcement, courts, and prosecutors.
• May provide transportation to and from court hearings.
• Assists in providing advocacy to victims of crime including courtroom escort, crisis counseling, and liaison with prosecutor.
• Assists with victim impact statements and restitution application completion.
• Assists in providing resources and resources referrals to victims.
• Notifies victims of court proceedings and status of case. Provides courtroom orientation and prepares victims for court proceedings. Escorts and presents victims in court; advocates for victims in court.
• Identify victims who would be considered eligible for victim compensation benefits and/or restitution.
• Attend restitution hearings including restitution court with victims; provide support and information to ensure their restitution requests are accurate and lawful.
• Assist victims with their post-conviction/order restitution needs; provides guidance, education and resources to assist victim with their restitution collection efforts.
• Assists with victim's rights education, training, and outreach.
• Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings
• Cultivates relationships with community partners and allied professions with the goal of facilitating a coordinated community response to child abuse, sexual and domestic violence.

Knowledge and Skills
• Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, court proceedings and documents.
• Knowledge of Title 13 of the Arizona Revised Statutes, victim notification requirements, and victim compensation
• Knowledge and application of providing trauma informed care.
• Knowledge of local, state, and national victim service resources
• Knowledge of medical, financial and other assisting agencies and referral resources in the community.
• Knowledge of court procedures regarding restitution collections.
• Knowledge and ability to use a computer to include use of Microsoft word and related software and general office equipment.
• Knowledge of other guidelines, regulations and statutes affecting the department.
• Skill in motivating and advocating for others' rights.
• Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.

Desirable Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D.; AND some college coursework in Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice or a related field; AND two years legal experience; AND ability to pass a background check; AND a valid driver's license. Arizona certified in victim advocacy, or ability to obtain certificate within a year of hire date.
