Performs skilled work in the operation of a water/wastewater treatment plant during a permanent or rotating shift. This is work learning the fundamentals of water and/or wastewater treatment plant operation under the supervision of a certified licensed plant operator. After instruction and orientation, the trainee will be expected to perform routine work as performed by a certified licensed plant operator. Work involves responsibility for the efficient operation of a treatment plant and routine adjustments to equipment and machinery operating controls, requiring some independent judgment in adjusting machinery, equipment and related control apparatus in accordance with established procedures and standards. Work also to include grounds and building maintenance. This position will also assist staff in the field as needed or when assigned by the supervisor.
• Performs work activities associated with the water/wastewater treatment plant(s) assigned. Ensures safe, effective operation of plant facilities.
• Conducts frequent and periodic inspections of plant to detect malfunctions and coordinates corrective actions.
• Ensures maintenance of accurate and complete records on plant operation in support of the licensed plant operator.
• Execute work and maintenance schedules, ensures that building, grounds and equipment are maintained in proper condition.
• Assists in formulating and implementing practice rules, techniques and procedures.
• Ensures safe use of all chemicals and mechanical treatment related supplies.
• Reads and records daily plant parameters and equipment readings. Makes adjustments to the equipment in coordination with plant operator.
• Implements interior and exterior building maintenance, housekeeping chores, and grounds maintenance tasks.
• Performs preventative and emergency maintenance on all electrical and mechanical plant systems.
• Requires shift work, holiday work, weekend work, and on-call duties when needed.
• May require physical labor activities including locating utility lines, valve and fire hydrant exercising, assisting other staff with water and sewer line repairs or other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
• May require assisting with developing and distributing Boil Water Notices to customers.

• Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment plant operations, policies, procedures and methods.
• Knowledge of math and chemistry.
• Basic knowledge of field service repairs, repair parts, lift station operations, knowledge of tools and equipment, some maintenance.
• Works well with others, communicates well with office staff and customers to assist in all phases of utilities, water and sewer operations.
• General computer operating skills (typing correspondence, email, and memorandums).
• Use of hand tools, some mechanical skills, operating equipment, meter reading.
• Ability to work rotating shifts including weekend duty, emergency call outs.
• Ability to make and maintain records and reports accurately.
• Good mechanical skills.
• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) equivalency.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS;
• Valid Florida Driver’s License.
• High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required. Must be at least 18 years old as required by Florida statutes.
• Preference is given to applicants with a completed state approved correspondence course and a passing score on the State of Florida Water or Wastewater Class "C" Operator exam. Or possess either a Class A, Class B, or Class C Water or Wastewater License issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection; copy must be submitted with application.
• Class “C” Certificate (Water/Wastewater) as issued by the State of Florida must be obtained within a timeframe specified by the supervisor or risk termination.
