Position Summary
Phlebotomists collect blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients while adhering to established protocols to ensure proper sample collection and patient safety. They transport blood specimens to laboratory departments, in accordance with proper procedures for such transport and handling. In addition, they conduct in-service education programs relating to theories and techniques of phlebotomy, and perform related clerical work.
Duties of a Phlebotomists may include the following but are not limited to:
Collects blood specimens from patients through the performance of venipuncture, capillary puncture techniques and/or making an incision on the patient's arm.
Provides phlebotomy services to patients in various inpatient, outpatient and offsite areas, following the orders of the patient's physician.
Enters data concerning blood specimens into a computer database; maintains appointment schedules and logs patients seen and tests obtained; records results of patients' tests and files them appropriately; keeps work-related statistics and performs related clerical duties.
Supervises, teaches and provides support to medical technology students in both theories and techniques of phlebotomy by designing and implementing formal and informal programs of instruction ensuring that all established protocols and procedures for proper sample collection and patient safety are adhered to.
Attends and/or presents related hospital in-service programs.
Maintains proper inventory of supplies and materials needed for the daily collection of blood specimens.
Participates in the overall function of the laboratory by assuming occasional substitution to other shifts or working prolonged shifts.
Performs other related duties as required or directed.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of experience as a Phlebotomist or a certificate in Phlebotomy from a recognized college, school, training program, hospital, health care facility, or the Armed Services.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior hospital/lab experience and basic understanding of medical laboratory technology.

In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulation that all hospitals and nursing homes "continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19," Candidates who are not already partially vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol Candidates who are partially vaccinated, but not yet fully vaccinated, must complete their vaccination series within three (3) calendar days of job offer or in accordance with vaccine manufacture protocol, whichever comes later.
