For more information, follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn or visit www.telesat.comThe Technologist is one of the individuals based out of the Iqaluit location responsible for the provision of day to day operations and maintenance of the IQL facility, local customer sites and remote site maintenance throughout Nunavut and Northern locations.

Main Responsibilities :
• Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on a variety of voice, data, audio and video equipment.
• Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on networking hardware, such as routers, switches, firewalls and hubs
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to IF and RF hardware such as LNAs, LNBs, up / down converters, antenna systems, Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPA), traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTA), modulators and switches, etc.
• Participate in the installation and commissioning of new and expansion services with engineering personnel, demonstrating thorough understanding of the systems.
• Complete pertinent documentation associated with maintenance and / or installation tasks.
• Complete comprehensive trip reports for remote site maintenance and customer reports as required.
• Ensure all safety requirements for ongoing tasks are adhered to.
• Responsible for operations and maintenance of Power (diesel, UPS and distribution systems), HVAC and supervisory and control systems.
• Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on complex antenna systems and subsystems.
• Work directly with Telesat customers and / or third party contractors
• Provide on the job training to Field Service Representatives (FSR’s) and assist in remote troubleshooting as required.
• Maintain a clean, safe, professional teleport workspace and demonstrate a professional attitude towards customers.

Education and Experienced Required :

Electronics / Telecommunications Technologist Diploma, or the equivalent.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, Strong Customer Service skills required.
• Familiarity with RF systems, especially satellite based RF systems is an asset
• Understanding of network fundamentals such as LAN / WAN and routing protocols (Ethernet, TCP / IP, UDP / IP, etc) is an asset
• Familiarity with interconnection of network devices and network architecture
• Familiar with various types of telecommunications test equipment
• Ability to demonstrate solid troubleshooting skills and prioritize resolution of events.
• Good mechanical skills are beneficial due to work required on antenna hardware.
• Ability to work alone in remote, sometimes isolated conditions.
• Knowledge of power distribution and HVAC systems.
• Familiarity with MS Office suite

Equipment Used

Various communications and RF uplink and downlink components are used including high power amplifiers, up convertors, down convertors, supervisory and control systems, routers, switches.

Facilities equipment such as back up Diesel generators, UPS systems and HVAC systems. Various pieces of test gear are used such as spectrum analyzers, radiation meters, power meters, digital volt meters, transport stream analyzers, video analyzers, LAN Analyzers and frequency counters.

Decision Making and Supervision

The technologist is expected to make decisions, independently, as to the correct course of action to take when an alarm is received or when a problem is reported or discovered on a teleport service or system.

The technologist is expected to perform planning and execution of assigned maintenance tasks and duties.

Supervision Exercised

Supervision of contractors or customers working at the location is sometimes required. Ability to work in an unsupervised environment ensuring continual professionalism and meeting the requirements of the job function.

Working Conditions
• Iqaluit is an operation with normal operation hours of 0800-1600, 5 days a week.
• Overtime and on-call on a routine basis with short notice dispatches to remote locations.
• Conditions within the region can be extremely harsh. Good judgement and safety awareness are key.
• Remote travel is required at times with Charter or small aircraft.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• Housing and remote benefits are provided for this position.

The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain a Secret Status Government clearance.
