FIREFIGHTER EMT
Pay Range: $49,111.69- $69,244.02
FLSA Status: Non- Exempt
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs fire prevention and firefighting activities to protect and safeguard lives and property; performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: A Firefighter-EMT is responsible for performing hazardous tasks relating to fire suppression and prevention under emergency conditions and providing first responder services. This position calls for the employee to be able to drive both support vehicles and fire engines. Orders of superiors must be executed promptly and efficiently. A Firefighter must readily become familiar with modern fire-fighting and life-saving methods and procedures after entrance on duty in order to perform tasks progressively increasing in difficulty. The work requires strict adherence to departmental rules and regulations. Superiors make assignments of specific tasks and indicate methods and procedures to be followed. Assignments may be made through either oral or written instructions. The work is closely inspected in progress and upon completion.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Responds to fire calls and fights fire in the protection of life and property;
• Drives and operates all fire department vehicles;
• Performs minor maintenance on all vehicles and equipment;
• Tests hydrants for pressure and flow;
• Assists in arson investigations and building inspections;
• Participates in training exercises;
• Performs basic life support and first responder functions;
• Provides general maintenance and upkeep at the fire station;
• Receives emergency calls and dispatches appropriate equipment;
• Tests and checks all equipment periodically;
• Performs rescue procedures;
• Uses protective breathing equipment in search and rescue operations;
• Conducts pre-incident surveys with a fire company;
• Protects adjacent buildings from spreading fire;
• Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect and assemble small parts involved in the operation of machines and determine if small defects are present and use measuring devices. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including work in high places, exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations, and working in narrow or close quarters. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability and willingness to learn modern fire-fighting and life-saving methods and procedures; ability to learn to operate equipment and vehicles; ability to get along well with others; willingness to perform any task assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple records and make reports; aptitude for mechanical work; conscientiousness and dependability; strength and ability to perform prolonged manual and mechanical work under adverse conditions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from high school and the ability to obtain Firefighter I and EMT certifications; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must obtain and maintain an appropriate, valid North Carolina Class driver's license and the following certifications: Firefighter I and EMT
