Job Title: Special Education Teacher Assistant Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt
Reports to: Campus Principal Pay Grade: IS3 or IS4 (depending on program) - 187 Days

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside the classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP) and/or Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification
Associates Degree or minimum of 48 college credits
Paraprofessional Certification for Educational Aide or other such credentials as may be required by the State Board for Educator Certification.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work well with children
Knowledge of general office equipment
Preferred Experience:
Previous successful experience working with children
TBSI/CPI Training
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
• Demonstrate acceptable work habits including teamwork, initiative and dependability.
• Report to work on time each day.
• Perform routine clerical duties.
• Assist the teacher in preparing Special Ed instructional materials and classroom displays.
• Work with individual special needs students or Special Ed small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
• Assist with the administration and scoring of Special Ed tests and assignments.
• Assist in supervising special education students throughout the school day, both inside and outside of the schools. This may include lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
• Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom
• Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
• Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
• Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
• Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
• Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.
• Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
• Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students
Posture: Frequent standing; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking and reaching
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning or students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases); Ability to restrain a student using CPI
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
