SCHOOL CITY OF EAST CHICAGO

2023-2024 School Year

POSITION: Director of Food Services

REPORTS TO: Chief of Financial Officer

START DATE: Upon Board Approval

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required):

• Bachelor's degree preferred

• Knowledge of food and nutrition, dietetics, food service management, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field.

• Extensive relevant knowledge and experience in areas such as institutional or school food service operations, management, business and/or

nutrition education.

• Additional abilities and skills: Leadership, manage, supervise and train cafeteria staff.

• Fluent computer skills. Communication skills both written and verbal.

• Accounting skills to plan and maintain budgets-desired.

• Fluent in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite.

• Skills with school POS systems and processing of state reports desired but not required.

Duties and Responsibilities

• The ability to oversee and manage multiple school district's school food service provider.

• Must possess or acquire the training and knowledge to apply the principles of nutrition menu planning that align with the federal guidelines to meet all serving options of the NSLP, NSB, SSO, and SFSP

• Prepares and manages both breakfast and ala carte menus for contracted districts.

• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance in the Position Contract and in accordance with USDA Policies and applicable laws.

• Promote and improve the school lunch programs throughout the district.

• Will keep accurate written records of any staff issues and report them directly to principal or designee.

• Supervise and control the purchasing of equipment at each school ensuring procurement guidelines and budgets are adhered to.

• Creates and monitors internal controls as they pertain to processing of budgets, applications, and rep01is to the state.

• Set sanitation standards in accordance to comply with the Indiana Department of Health, County Health Departments, and principals of the

National Sanitation Foundation.

• Monitor budgets, expenditures, and review financial transactions with school district administration as necessary.

• Assist district annually with setting school lunch pricing in accordance with state requirements.

• Complete the annual USDA Commodity Survey for school district.

• Process Free and Reduced Lunch Applications at the request of the district and direct certification and verification.

• Monitoring, updating, and reporting on the CNP-Web and filing of state reports as directed by the state of Indiana.

• Plans varied menus to insure that food is appetizing and nutritionally suitable for children and distributes menus to each school as well as to

local media.

• Establish and oversee proper inventory procedures

• Inspects food and food preparation to maintain quality standards and sanitation regulations as required by USDA guidelines. Supervises and

coordinates activities of workers who prepare, cook, serve food, clean premises and wash dishware.

• Develop and maintain the School Wellness Policy in accordance with the USDA Rules and Regulations

• Collaborate with school staff on head-start and the dietitian as it pertains to CACFP

• Reviews and keeps daily and monthly reports as submitted by cafeteria managers.

• Investigates and resolves food quality and service complaint; develops methods for feedback from students, parents, faculty, and community.

• Prepares bids for milk, bakery products, grocery, cleaning, and paper supplies and makes purchase recommendations to the Superintendent

• Attend food shows and seminars to keep abreast of market trends, and new products

Working Conditions and Physical Environment

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; hear and understand speech at normal levels; physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to angry students/parents and neighborhoods considered to have high levels of violence potential
