Department Summary
The Institute for Translational Research is devoted to bringing novel diagnostics and interventions to patients and families suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, fostering translational research in neurodegenerative diseases at UNTHSC, and Create solutions for a healthier community. Our team spans basic "bench-top" science, clinical research, community-based research and clinical trials. Our translational approach is intended to foster discovery and expedite those discoveries toward the benefit of those suffering from brain disease. A particular emphasis of ITR is the development of personalized (or person-focused) medicine for Alzheimer's disease.
Position Overview
The Director of Communications will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive communications plan that promotes the Executive Director’s strategy and vision. This role includes coordinating with consultants and the Institution’s communications team and directing all external marketing communications, managing traditional and social media activities, and initiating innovative and consistent messaging across various channels. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in marketing and communications, with the ability to manage a team and work collaboratively with other departments
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Ability to conceptualize, plan and organize multiple programs and assignments effectively
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Ability to be flexible and ability to maintain a strong commitment to building and sustaining relationships
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, conduct multiple tasks and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to work effectively within a team and work closely with other staff, faculty, and students toward a common goal.
• Understanding of institutional strategy (or ability to quickly assimilate) and ability to integrate the strategy into modes of communication

• A minimum of 6 years of experience (with 7 years preferred) in a related field with at least one year experience in a leadership role preferred.

Job Duties:
• Develop and implement a strategic communications and marketing plan that supports the Executive Director’s strategy and vision and enhances the Director’s and Institute’s national and international reputation.
• Coordinate development and implementation with consultants and the Institution’s communications team and successfully creates and maintains project schedules and budgets.
• Maintains appropriate sense of urgency to drive projects and follow-through. Identify key messages and target audiences to effectively communicate the Institute’s vision, mission, and values as determined by the Executive Director and in accordance with the Institution’s.
• Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to ensure positive coverage and manage media inquiries and develop and execute campaigns (including but not limited to direct mail and email campaigns) to market and promote Institute initiatives and events.
• Oversee the creation of high quality content for various communication channels, including press releases, newsletters, social media, website, and other external marketing communications and ensure all content generated by the ITR comms team is high quality and aligned with the Institution’s and Institute’s brand voice and messaging.
• Coordinate with the Institution’s Crisis Communications team to manage and mitigate any crises that may arise.
• Foster effective internal communications to keep employees informed and engaged and develop and implement communication programs to support organizational change and promote a positive company culture.
• Exhibit initiative and ability to lead and execute a communications plan without direct supervision of daily tasks – to achieve the Executive Director’s strategic plan and vision and provide guidance and support to ensure success in executing the communications strategy – including proper oversight of budgets and deadlines
• Monitor and analyze the effectiveness of communication strategies and campaigns and provides regular reports to senior management on communication metrics and outcomes.
