DIRECTOR OF SAFETY AND SECURITY

Summary

Saline Area Schools is seeking the leadership of a Safety and Security Director committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students, staff, and school community, with common practices, language, and transparent protocols. This position reports to the Superintendent, is housed in Saline Middle School, and works in partnership with the district leadership teams across eight buildings, and local partners.

Qualifications

Required Education/Certification
• Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Emergency Management, School Administration, or a related field
• Master’s degree preferred

Required Experience
• A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in security management, law enforcement, school administration or emergency response, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
• Knowledge of Michigan school safety laws and compliance requirements, including the Michigan State Police Office of School Safety guidelines
• Experience in developing and managing school safety plans, conducting risk assessments, and leading crisis response teams.
• Proficiency in using and integrating security technology systems, emergency communication tools, and access controls
• Leadership in safety and crisis management
• Prior experience in strategic planning and risk mitigation
• Relationship-building with law enforcement and community partners
• Effective communication and public relations skills
• Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making skills under pressure

Preferred Experience
• Previous experience working in a school district related to school safety and security training, implementation and accountability
• Prior training in diversity, equity and inclusion

Job Responsibilities And Duties
• Lead all safety and security protocols district-wide with current practices and a high level of accountability.
• Lead regular internal and interdisciplinary safety and security meetings including collaboration with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency management agencies to review and enhance joint response strategies.
• Serve as the district’s primary liaison during crises, ensuring a coordinated approach to incident response.
• Observe, evaluate, and analyze district-wide emergency drills, including fire, lockdown, and evacuation exercises in collaboration with building principals.
• Work with each building principal to regularly update building safety manuals and evacuation/rally point maps, and train building staff.
• Conduct a comprehensive audit of existing safety procedures and identify areas requiring updates in accordance with law and best practice.
• Regularly update the district’s emergency operations plan (EOP) and ensure it reflects the latest procedures for crisis management.
• Oversee the deployment and monitoring of the district’s surveillance camera systems, ensuring optimal placement and functionality.
• Oversee the integration of access controls, emergency communication tools, and security technology systems.
• Establish partnerships with community businesses and locations to maintain reunification sites.
• Provide immediate and comprehensive feedback for improvement.
• Develop and deliver training programs on standard response protocols, crisis intervention, and threat assessment, etc. for all staff.
• Communicate safety updates, guidelines, and best practices regularly to the entire school community. Participate in community-based safety councils and parent meetings to address concerns and keep stakeholders informed
• Network with security directors in neighboring districts to share best practices and collaborate on regional initiatives.
• Attend relevant safety and security conferences to stay informed of the latest trends and technologies.
• Work with the superintendent and Board of Education to outline a multi-year plan for safety enhancements.
• Identify funding opportunities, including grants and partnerships, to support ongoing security projects.
• Plan for future upgrades and technology advancements that will further strengthen the district’s safety infrastructure.
• Maintain a regular presence in school buildings and at extracurricular events in order to understand, support, and evaluate day-to-day operations.
• Supervise, in conjunction with building administrators, district team members assigned to safety and security responsibilities.
• All other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

SALARY: $95,158 - $109,298

Unaffiliated Contract with Comprehensive Benefits Package, Holiday Pay (13 days), and Paid Vacation (20 days)
