Role Overview:

The Hematology Advanced Practice Provider’s role at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is to ensure quality of care through consultation, collaboration, continuing education, certification, and evaluation.

  • University of Miami Hospital and Clinics/Sylvester Cancer Center (Doral) - 8375 NW 53rd Terrace Doral, FL 33166

JOB FUNCTIONS:

Accountabilities:

I. Clinical (Ambulatory)

  1. Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
  2. Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment and collaborates with a physician in formulating treatment plans.
  3. Writes prescriptions for medications and blood products based upon laboratory results and therapeutic measures in accordance with written practice protocols.
  4. Requests written consultations from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate patient care.
  5. Assesses and follows consult patients independently when required.
  6. Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests and intervenes accordingly.
  7. Advises collaborating physician regarding patient care and reports actions taken.
  8. Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.
  9. Initiates appropriate actions to implement therapeutic plans consistent with healthcare needs.
  10. Answers patient-related inquiries via telecommunication systems.
  11. Assists in the management of family dynamics during patient care.
  12. Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds to ensure quality care.
  13. Performs patient triage and determines urgency for physician evaluation.
  14. Provides symptom management for side effects of hematologic oncologic treatment.
  15. Assists with Peer-to-Peer authorizations and medical forms for patients.
  16. Ensures efficient clinic operations, coordinating care with referring physicians.
  17. Performs procedures if competency is met (e.g., bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures).
  18. Acts as a preceptor for APP students and new staff.
  19. Rotates with colleagues for weekend and holiday call from Sylvester patients.
  20. Responds to medical emergencies in the CTU and clinics.
  21. Communicates with triage nurses regarding patient care needs.

II. Research

  1. CITI certification within three months of employment.
  2. Facilitates clinical research protocols and coordinates patient care with research staff.
  3. Reviews clinical trial options with patients and families.
  4. Interviews and examines research subjects.
  5. Evaluates research subjects for study inclusion/enrollment.
  6. Follows regulatory requirements for human subjects’ research compliance.
  7. Monitors study-related labs and imaging, providing follow-up to patients on trials.
  8. Triage research patient communication.
  9. Reports SAEs and AEs to designated research staff.
  10. Communicates with PIs regarding investigational treatment questions.
  11. Performs study-related procedures if competency is met.

Supervision Received:

  • Hematology APP Supervisor/Director
  • Division Chief of Hematology
  • Collaborating Physician

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):

  • State License
  • Board certification
  • CITI certification or within three months of employment
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • Minimum of two years of Hematology experience as an Advanced Practice Provider
  • OCN or AOCNP preferred

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing: Valid State of Florida APRN License or PA License

Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
