Director of External Affairs
The Director of External Affairs is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of Mississippi Children’s Museum - Meridian (MCM-M) marketing and public relations activities. The Director of External Affairs serves as the primary point of contact for external public relations connections and as well as oversees all marketing for MCM-M. The Director of External Affairs must be a creative self-starter, who can multi-task and enjoys working within a small mission-driven environment that is community minded. The Director of External Affairs must have the ability to work independently on projects, must be able to work under pressure at times, and to handle confidential matters with discretion. The Director of External Affairs reports to the Executive Director.
Principal Accountabilities:
• Collaborate with department heads to ensure museum mission and brand are consistent and promoted for all events and programs.
• Collaborate to develop creative marketing partnerships to enhance understanding of the museum’s role in the community.
• Responsible for the development/revision of all donor-focused material copy, working with the MCM Marketing Department in Jackson, including but not limited to sponsorship proposals, fundraising appeals, annual report, etc.
• Strengthen media partnerships, with emphasis on building relationships with all local media and support museum spokespersons on interactions with media.
• Communicate directly with the community, volunteers, donors, and staff on the museum’s program and administrative initiatives.
• Provide leadership to build relationships crucial to the museum’s success; managing a variety of special projects.
• Coordinates with MCM statewide marketing department on a variety of projects. Desired Qualifications:
• At least three years of experience in marketing, public relations, or communications is preferred.
• Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications, or a related field.
• Experience with graphic design and Adobe Creative Suite.
• Experience with Wordpress or similar.
• Experience managing multiple social media platforms.
• Experience with Constant Contact or similar.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
• Problem-solving skills, creativity, and a desire to contribute in a meaningful way to the mission of the museum.
• Flexible, positive, team player, and forward thinking.
• Proven ability as an organized and motivated employee, to initiate and follow through on projects
• independently.
• High comfort level working with children and a diverse public.
Hours:
• Must be able to work 40 hours a week.
• Occasionally work during the evenings and on weekends for MCM-M mission related events.
