The City of West Linn Police Department (PD) is currently seeking skilled law enforcement professionals that can effectively lead the Department as a Police Sergeant on a variety of projects, supervise the performance of teams and coach as well as mentor individuals and groups that may have competing interests.

As a Police Sergeant, you will provide supervision and direction over assigned law enforcement officers, and administrative personnel. In this role, you will plan, direct and supervise patrol, investigations and/or administrative activities.

The City of West Linn Police Department (PD) believes in community-based policing and seeks involvement with all community programs, civic groups and neighborhood associations.

Police Sergeants may receive up to 22% in incentives in addition to the base salary.
• Special Assignments = 5%
• Education and Certification = up to 17%
• Longevity = 2%

Examples of Duties
• Supervises, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work performance of police officers and/or administrative personnel for compliance with established Departmental policies and procedures and legal obligations.
• Evaluates operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommends improvements and modifications; receives written reports and reviews for content, accuracy and completeness; prepares various reports on operations and activities.
• Creates a positive and supportive work environment; enforces a safe workplace; establishes a culture of teamwork and communication; creates a workplace that promotes the values of equity, diversity and inclusion and actively promotes a respectful environment where everyone has a sense of belonging.
• Performs routine police officer duties and responsibilities to include routine patrol; report writing; investigations; responding to public inquiries; testifying in court as a witness; and performing CPR/AED and minor first aid at scenes of accidents.
• Participates in the selection of staff; provides or coordinates staff trainings; coaches employees to correct deficiencies; and implements discipline procedures.
• Directs briefings and planned activities of a patrol or detective shift; reviews and determines assignments; and makes recommendations concerning Departmental policies and activities.
• Conducts internal investigations as directed and presents findings to the Captain and/or Chief of Police.
• May serve as a liaison to the City during labor negotiations; and may aid in the grievance process as directed and consistent with the collective bargaining agreement.
• May represent the Department through presentations for community, civic and other groups.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
A typical way to gain the knowledge and abilities would be:
• Four (4) years of experience as a certified level law enforcement officer.
Additional Licenses, Certificates, Physical Abilities and Specialty Requirements:
• Must possess a driver's license that is valid in the State of Oregon and have an acceptable driving record per City of West Linn's policy.
• Must be able to successfully pass an extensive background check.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Successful candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Knowledge of:
• Principles, practices, and procedures of law enforcement;
• Methods and techniques of patrol and investigation;
• Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation;
• State and County criminal and traffic laws;
• Laws governing arrest, search and seizure;
• Police investigative procedures and techniques;
• Leadership.
Skills to:
• Lead a team; and
• Use of firearms, police automotive and radio equipment, and surveillance equipment.
Ability to:
• Supervise, train, evaluate, and assign personnel;
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals and groups who come from diverse backgrounds and represent members of the public, co-workers, and/or vendors;
• Communicate effectively in both written and oral forms;
• Deal both tactfully and professionally with individuals;
• Think clearly and perform effectively in stressful or emergency situations;
• Maintain accurate and complete records; and
• Obtain information through interviews, interrogation, and observation.

SUMMARY OF EMPLOYEE BENEFITS THROUGH THE CITY OF WEST LINN
The City of West Linn offers an excellent benefit package in support of your physical, emotional and financial wellbeing. Benefits vary depending on position and full-time or part-time status.
RETIREMENT/PENSION (Defined Benefit Program) - the City is enrolled in Oregon PERS and pays both the employer and employee contributions.

ADDITIONAL RETIREMENT BENEFIT - in addition to the employee's regular compensation, the City pays four (4) percent of the employee's earned salary. At the employee's election, they may use this additional compensation to participate in a deferred compensation program offered by the City.

MEDICAL/DENTAL/VISION - 90% City paid.

ALTERNATE WORK SCHEDULE - City Hall operates on a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.

HOLIDAYS - 11 paid holidays per year.

VACATION LEAVE - 135 to 224 hours of paid vacation leave per year based on years of service.

MANAGEMENT LEAVE - 40 hours of paid management leave per year.
